The document discusses the Jigsaw strategy, which is a cooperative learning technique. It breaks students into groups where each member becomes an expert on an assigned part of a lesson. Experts then teach their part to their home group. The objectives are for students to understand how Jigsaw is used in elementary social studies instruction and identify its 10 steps. Some advantages are improved motivation and enjoyment, while disadvantages include time needed for preparation and group formation.

WHAT IS JIGSAW? • The jigsaw technique is a method of organizing classroom activity that makes students dependent on each other to succeed. It breaks classes into groups that each assemble a piece of an assignment and synthesize their work when finished. It was designed by social psychologist Elliot Aronson to help weaken racial cliques in forcibly integrated schools. A study by John Hattie found that the jigsaw method benefits students' learning. ADVANTAGES:
• Improve students’ motivation.
• Increase the enjoyment of the learning experience. • Increasing positive educational outcomes. • Most teachers find Jigsaw easy to learn. • It can be used for another subject. DISADVANTAGES:
• Require some time to prepare students to learn how to
work in groups. • Require some time to make groups that each group has heterogeneity in their member ability, and • Teacher should make special preparation for teaching in the class. 10 STEPS OF JIGSAW 1. Appoint a leader for each home group. 2. Divide the day’s lesson into five to six segments. 3. Divide students into five to six-person home groups. Members should be diverse in terms of gender, ability and ethnicity (if applicable). 4. Assign each student in the home group to learn one segment. 5. Give students enough time to comprehend and master their assigned segment. 6. Form temporary expert groups by instructing students with the same segments to sit together. Give them enough time to discuss the main points, clarify questions and rehearse the presentations they will make to their home group. 7. After the given time, bring students back to their home groups. 8. Ask each member to present his or her segment to the group. The leader should encourage the flow of discussion and the asking of question. 9. The teacher should roam around the classroom and observe the process. Make appropriate interventions for groups experiencing difficulties. 10. At the end of the session, give a quiz to assess student learning . How Jigsaw is used in Elementary Social Instruction? • The Jigsaw strategy asks a group of students to become “experts” on a specific text or body of knowledge and then share that material with another group of students. This strategy offers a way to help students understand and retain information while they develop their collaboration. ASSESSMENT
