Persuasive Essay

A persuasive essay aims to convince


the reader to agree with the writer’s
point of view or make the reader take a
particular action​.
Features
Learn about It! of Persuasive Essay
1. It has ethos. This means that you mention
credible sources, be it an individual or a group of
people who is an expert in the field or topic being
talked about.

Examples:
● According to the National Geographic, solid wastes do not only
injure sea animals, but they also have fatal effects on them.
● The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration stated
that the majority of pollutants going into the ocean come from
activities on land.

2. It has logos. This means that you need to
support your argument by providing facts.

Examples:
● Because of solid water pollutants, a number of marine lives have been
put in danger. In fact, according to the National Geographic, some
700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or
become entangled in plastic.
● Because of solid water pollutants, a number of marine lives have been
put in danger. For instance, in 2014, an estimated 15 to 51 trillion
microplastic particles were floating in the world’s oceans, weighing
between 93,000 and 236,000 tonnes.

3. It has pathos. This means that you need to
evoke the emotions of the readers.

Examples:
● As can be seen, the poor animals have injuries all over their bodies.
Just imagine how hard it is to be trapped in a piece of plastic when all
you want is to live.
● If you don’t feel anything just by looking at the pictures, then you have
a heart of stone. These poor animals have suffered because of what
we have done.

4. It has a sense of kairos. This means that you
need to show that the reader needs to take
action on the issue.

Examples:
● If nothing is done to fix the issue of water pollution,
eventually we will no longer have fish to eat in the
future.
● The problem will only get worse by the year if
nothing is done to fix it.

Identify whether the following statements show ethos,
pathos, logos, or kairos.

1. As a dentist, I believe it is important to change your


toothbrush every three months.
2. In 2017, UNAIDS identified that about 9.4 million people
around the world are unaware that they have HIV.
3. Despite our busy schedule, we have to be mindful of our
friends or family who may be suffering from mental
health illnesses.

4. The World Health Organization identified burnout as a
medical diagnosis.
5. One of the ways to prevent burnout is to allot time for
relaxation and recreation.
6. According to statistics, Filipinos spend 7.6 hours of
reading per week.
7. Don Quixote is the best selling book worldwide with 500
million copies sold.
8. Many celebrities expressed that people must register to
vote on May 13.

9. In order to reduce the use of plastics, we have to look for


ways to use metal utensils such as metal straws, spoons
and forks, and chopsticks instead of disposable plastic
utensils.

this week. Cut out or print a copy of the editorial article
you chose.
2. Look for statements that contain ethos, pathos, logos,
and kairos.
3. Accomplish this worksheet by categorizing the statements
to its appropriate mode of persuasion.
