TOOLS FOR STORING AND
SHARING INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
In this presentation I will be
discussing the tools for storing and
sharing information, the categories
of tools for storing and sharing
information and their uses with its
hyperlinks.
What is a storage device?
• A Storage device is a computer
hardware component that helps to
store, porting or retrieving data files
and objects. Storage devices are
capable to store information in both
natures like as temporarily and
permanently. They are also referred
to as
""storage
media" or "storage medium"

TYPES OF STORAGE
• There are basically (2) two categories of storage
devices they are:
• (A) Temporary storage devices
• (B) Permanent Storage devices
(A) Temporary Storage Devices
This can also be described as Primary Storage Devices. The following are the basic
features of the Temporary /Primary Storage Devices:
• Located on the motherboard or on the Central Processing Unit if the computer
• It has limited storage size.
• Data is usually lost when such device power is off.
• The information/data stored in such devices are temporarily stored, they are not
permanently secured.
• It provides the fastest data access in computers.
• It has limited storage capacity, with the capacity to store between 4GB to 128GB of
data.

Examples of Primary/Temporary
Storage Devices
(1). Random Access Memory (R.A.M.)
This is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system (OS), application programs and data in
current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the device's processor.
(2). Read Only Memory (ROM)
As the name suggests, this type of memory can only be read from the computer but you can’t write any data to it. It
is non-volatile

(3). Cache Memory
Cache memory is a supplementary memory system
that temporarily stores frequently used instructions
and data for quicker processing by the central
processing unit (CPU) of a computer.
The cache augments, and is an extension of, a
computer’s main memory.
(B) Permanent Storage Devices
This can also be described as Secondary Storage Devices The following are
the basic features of the Permanent /Secondary Storage Devices:
• It has long term storage to hold data and programs that might not be
used currently but they can be used in the future.
• It is not as fast as Primary Storage Devices.
• Located on separate hardware storage devices.
• Does not have fast data access as the Primary Storage Devices.
• Data is not lost when power is off.
• It has a Larger storage size than the primary Storage Devices.
• It has a storage size of about 512GB to 1TB

Examples of Secondary/Permanent
Storage Devices
There are Four (4) major categories of Secondary/Permanent
Storage Devices.
They are:
① Magnetic storage types.
② Flash storage types
③ Optical storage types
④ Online storage types

A. Magnetic Storage Types
Magnetic storage refers to magnetized media, such as hard disk drives, that are used by computer systems to
store data. Examples include:
HARD DISK DRIVES. FLOPPY DISKS. HARD DISK DRIVE

(B). Flash Storage Type
Flash storage is a solid-state technology that uses flash
memory chips for writing and storing data.
Examples includes:
SD CARD. USB FLASH DRIVE.

(C). Optical Storage Types
These Compact Disks (CDs) which have disks feature
microscopic pits and bumps that disk drives read as
binary data. It can either be CD or DVD. The two are
similar but varies in capacity.

(D). Online Storage Types
These are model of computer data storage in which the digital
data is stored in logical pools, said to be on "the cloud". They are
non volatile and the safest means of data/information storage.
They include: cloud storage, drop box, google drive etc.

TOOLS FOR SHARING
INFORMATION
For sharing information in the 21st century, software which
are used include: Google Drive, OneHub, Microsoft
OneDrive, eFile Cabinet, DropBox Business, Wire,
WeTransfer, FileCloud, Xender etc. Most of them are also
used in storing information. These software are fast, safe
and non volatile.
