MODULE 1:
FUNDAMENTAL
OPERATIONS ON
FRACTIONS
PART 1.
REVIEW OF BASIC
CONCEPTS
A. REVIEW OF BASIC CONCEPTS
A. Prime Number- a positive integer
(except 1) whose factors are only 1
and itself.

Examples: 2, 3, 5, 13, 37,1051

A. REVIEW OF BASIC CONCEPTS
B. Composite Number- a positive
integer (except 1) which can be
expressed as a product of two or more
positive integer.
Examples: 2, 3, 5, 13, 37,1051
A. REVIEW OF BASIC CONCEPTS
C. Relatively Prime Numbers
(Coprime) - positive integers which do
not have common prime factors.

Examples: 6 and 35, 4 and 121

Tell me:
Which of the following is a prime number?
97 89 67 37 42 15
98 61 83 55 35 101
B. CONCEPT OF FRACTION
A fraction is a number written in the
form , where a and b are whole
numbers but b cannot be zero. The
number on top is called numerator, and
the number below, b, is a denominator.
B. CONCEPT OF FRACTION

B. CONCEPT OF FRACTION
In a fraction, the denominator
tells the number of parts a
whole is divided, while the
numerator indicates how many
of those are taken.
B. CONCEPT OF FRACTION
The fraction means the unit is
divided into five parts and the two of
the five parts are taken. Moreover,
also means, 2 divided by 5.

C. KINDS OF FRACTIONS
1. Proper Fractions- is a fraction
less than one. Its numerator is
less than the denominator.
Examples: , , , ,
C. KINDS OF FRACTIONS
2. Improper Fractions- is a fraction
greater than or equal to one. Its
numerator is greater than its
denominator.
Examples: , , , ,

3. Mixed Number- is the sum of a
whole number and a proper fraction.
Examples: , , ,
C. KINDS OF FRACTIONS
4. Similar Fractions- are fractions
with the same denominator.
5. Dissimilar Fractions- are
fractions with the different
denominator.
D. FRACTIONS IN THE NUMBER LINE
Plot the following fractions in the
number line.
E. EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS
These are the fractions that
have different numerators and
denominators but are equal to
the same value.

PART 2.
REDUCING FRACTIONS
IN LOWEST TERM
SIMPLIFICATION OF FRACTIONS
Simplifying fraction is also called
reducing fractions in lowest term.
There are steps for the solution of
fractions to reduce it in lowest term.
SIMPLIFICATION OF FRACTIONS
Step 1. Get the GCF or the greatest
common factor of the numerator and
the denominator.
Step 2. Divide the GCF to both-
numerator and denominator.
SIMPLIFICATION OF FRACTIONS
Reduce the following fractions in
lowest term.
PART 3.
CONVERTION OF
FRACTIONS
CONVERTION OF FRACTIONS
1. Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
Step 1. Divide the numerator into the denominator.
Step 2. Get the quotient as your whole number in
the mixed number, your remainder as the
numerator and just copy the denominator.
CONVERTION OF FRACTIONS
Convert the following improper fractions to
mixed number.
CONVERTION OF FRACTIONS
2. Mixed Number to Improper Fraction
Step 1. Multiply the denominator to the whole
number then add it to the numerator, and it will be
our numerator in the improper fraction.
Step 2. Just copy the denominator as our
denominator in the improper fraction.
CONVERTION OF FRACTIONS
Convert the following mixed numbers to
improper fraction.
PART 4.
OPERATIONS ON
FRACTIONS
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
A. Similar fractions
Adding and subtracting fractions with same
denominators is like a piece of cake. Just
add or subtract all the given numerator and
just copy the denominator.
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Add the following fractions:
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Subtract the following fractions:
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS

B. Dissimilar fractions
There are several steps in adding
dissimilar fractions. Dissimilar
fractions are fractions that has
different denominator.
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Steps in Adding/Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions:
Step 1. At first, get the Least Common
Denominator (LCD) of the fraction by looking
at the smallest number divisible by all
denominators of the given set of fractions.
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS

Steps in Adding/Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions:

Step 2. After getting the LCD, divide the
LCD to the denominator of the given set
of fraction and multiply to each of the
numerator.
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Steps in Adding/Subtracting Dissimilar Fractions:
Step 3. After dividing and multiplying,
depending on the given operation, add or
subtract all the numbers in the numerator, and
you already have the sum of the fractions.
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Add the following dissimilar fractions:
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Subtract the following dissimilar fractions:
1. ADDITION & SUBTRACTION OF FRACTIONS
Subtract the following dissimilar fractions:
2. MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS
In multiplying fractions, we simply multiply
the numerator and multiply the
denominator. After multiplying, check if it is
reduced in lowest term, if not, find the GCF
so you can be able to get the lowest term.
2. MULTIPLICATION OF FRACTIONS
Multiply the following:
3. DIVISION OF FRACTIONS
Dividing two fractions is the same as
multiplying the first fraction by the
reciprocal of the second fraction.
There are several steps in dividing
fractions.
3. DIVISION OF FRACTIONS
Steps in Dividing Fractions:
Step 1. Find the reciprocal
(reverse the numerator and
denominator) of the second
fraction.
3. DIVISION OF FRACTIONS

Steps in Dividing Fractions:

Step 2. Multiply the two numerators.
Step 3. Multiply the two denominators.
Step 4. Simplify if needed.
3. DIVISION OF FRACTIONS
Divide the following fractions:
