Insulation Resistance Testing of Electric Motors
Insulation Resistance Testing of Electric Motors
of electric motors
Prepared by: ETO Jonicel Asanza
Course Description:
a short lesson about Insulation resistance testing of
electric motors, it composed of definition of meaning of
insulation resistance and insulation test, discussing types
of testing commonly used, enumeration of steps and
safety procedures on insulation resistance testing of
motors onboard the ship, types of insulation tester and a
comparison on what standard reading measurement limit
to be used.
Define the meaning of Insulation resistance and Insulation resistance testing of
electric
Course motors.
Objective:
Identify who are qualified person to perform the Insulation resistance testing of
At the end of the short lesson students should be able to
electric motors
Distinguished different types of tester.
Identify types of testing commonly used.
Enumerate the steps and safety procedure on performing Insulation resistance
testing of electric motors onboard the ship.
Estimate the resistance limit value if the unit under test pass or failed the insulation
test.
perform a very simple insulation test by using an electric fan motor winding as unit
under test and insulation tester.
What is insulation resistance?
Insulation resistance is the ability
of the insulation material to resist
the current flow.
Insulation resistance is measured
between the insulated conductors
and earth.
What is insulation resistance
testing?
Is the process of assessing and
monitoring insulation integrity of the
motor winding.
Typically it involve injecting a test
voltage and then measuring resistance by
the use of insulation tester unit.
Who is the authorized person
to perform the insulation test?
(In this case we will put a scenario that we will be onboard the ship)
STCW III/6 Electro Technical Officer
(ETO) is a licensed member of the engine
department and are responsible for
monitoring, maintenance and repair on
all electronic and electrical equipment
onboard the ship under the Chief
Engineer’s overview.
What are the 2 types
Mechanical typeof Insulation tester or Megger?
Digital type with battery
operation
What are Types of Insulation
Resistance Test?
Short-Time or Spot-Reading Test
you simply connect the Megger
instrument across the
insulation to be tested and
operate it for a short, specific
time period (60 seconds is
usually used).
What are Types of Insulation Resistance
Test?
Time resistance test
is referred to as the dielectric absorption
(DAR) for 30 – 60 sec. test or polarization
index (PI) test for 2 - 10 min or more.
as you plot timed test results ,the curve rises at
first and then continues to gradually rise, If the
curve begins to turn down then moisture, dirt,
or other factors may be compromising your
insulation.
What are Types of Insulation Resistance
Test?
Step voltage test
This involves testing at multiple test
voltages and plotting the results.
The test begins at an initial test voltage.
At a specified interval, typically one
minute, a measurement is recorded, after
which the test voltage is increased.
What are the steps and safety procedures to perform
the insulation test on motor?
Secure a permit to work from the bridge signed by safety officer
Initiate a lock out tag out procedure Properly logged at LOTO Logbook
Secure isolation permit issued by engineer on duty
Have a toolbox meeting with the on duty engine department crew
Perform the insulation test of the motor with proper PPE ( Electrical Gloves)
Disconnect the wye connector of the motor if wye connected winding,
same also for delta connection winding.
Measure the resistance between the windings U-V, V-W, W-U and between U &
earth, V& earth, W& earth.
The readings are logged down, and the graph is plotted, and the trend of insulation
resistance is checked.
Always discharge the motor winding after your test, by short-circuiting UVW
terminal to the ground. ALWAYS TAKE THIS SAFETY MEASURE.
After the test put back all the winding connection and power connection and
power isolation and close all permit procedure.
How to determine if the motor pass or
failed the insulation test?
The rule states that insulation resistance should be
approximately one meg-ohm for each 1000 volts
of operating voltage, If a motor rated at 2400 volts
it should have a minimum insulation resistance of
2.4 meg-ohms. However, Each plant should
establish their own standards. by EE.com
Typically the insulation alarm limit is 1 kΩ per volt.
For example, 480 VAC power system could have an
alarm limit of 0.48 MΩ. by DEIF.com
