Concept of Functions

This document discusses functions and relations. It begins by defining a relation as a rule that relates values from a domain to a range. It then defines a function as a well-defined relation where each domain value is related to only one range value. The document goes on to describe different ways to represent functions, including using equations, ordered pairs, mapping diagrams, and graphs. It also discusses evaluating functions, odd and even functions, operations on functions, and composite functions.

DEFINITION OF A RELATION
A RELATION is a rule that relate values from a set of
values called the domain to a second set of values called
the range.

DEFINITION OF A FUNCTION
A FUNCTION is a well-defined RELATION where
each element in the domain is related to ONLY ONE
value in the range.

EVALUATION OF FUNCTIONS

To find f(x) for a given value of x is to evaluate the

function f by substituting the value of x in the equation.

Problem 1. Given f(x)=2x+4, find the value of

f(x) for x=3, -1, and (x+3).

A basic understanding of these

functions is crucial for someone who
wants to apply CALCULUS to real-

SUM: (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)

DIFFERENCE: (f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x)

PRODUCT: (f ⋅ g)(x) = f(x) ⋅ g(x)
