During the second week of development, the trophoblast differentiates into the inner cytotrophoblast layer and outer syncytiotrophoblast layer. This establishes the utero-placental circulation through the formation of primary stem villi and intervillous spaces between days 9-13. The embryoblast divides into the hypoblast and epiblast layers, forming the bilaminar germ disc. The hypoblast forms the primary yolk sac and lines the blastocyst cavity, now called the primary yolk sac. The primary extra-embryonic mesoderm and coelom form through the delamination of the primary yolk sac and amniotic cavity, establishing the connecting stalk.
