the words that show action?
We use these words to show that a person
or the subject in a sentence is
doing something.
Verbs are action words. Verbs show what
the subject in a sentence is doing.
Andrei joins his online class for two
hours every day. He uses his tablet for
video conferencing with his teacher
and his classmates. He sometimes
borrows his brother’s laptop. After his
daily online class, he opens his
modules to answer the target learning
tasks for the day. Sometimes, his
parents help him whenever he has
some questions about the lessons.
Who is the boy in the paragraph?
What kind of class does he have?
For how long did he take it up?
What did he used for video conferencing?
After his online class, what is his next activity?
Who help him when he has some questions about the lessons?
How about you, during our Modular Class during pandemic, who helps
you at home?
Did you find it easy in doing your task on your own during pandemic?
Why?
What did you like more, face-to-face or modular class? Why?
Now, face-to-face classes, what motivates you to study?
Read the following sentences.
1. Andrei joins his online class for two hours every day.
2. He uses his tablet for video conferencing with his teacher and his classmates.
3. He sometimes borrows his brother’s laptop.
4. After his daily online class, he opens his modules to answer the target learning tasks for
the day.
5. Sometimes, his parents help him whenever he has some questions about the lessons.

Notice the highlighted words above. These words


used in the passage express actions in their
simple present tense. Notice that the words
joins, uses, borrows, opens, help and has are written
in their simple present tense either in –s form
or simple form depending on the number of the
Here are the simple basic rules to remember and to
follow in using the simple present tense of verbs.

 Singular subjects and the pronouns he, she, or


it use the present singular form of the verbs.
 When the subject of a sentence is singular, -s or
–es is added to the end of the verb.
 Plural subjects take the base form of the verb
when expressing present tense.
 Time expressions like every day, every week,
once a month and yearly show the present tense.
1. Ricky helps his parents clean their house every weekend.
2. Mark shares his lunch with his classmate Joey because he
is from a poor family.
3. The chef cooks delicious and healthy food and delivers it to
the orphanage in their barangay for free.
4. Luis carries his younger brother’s bag in going to school every
day.
5. Celina feeds her dog every morning before she goes to school .

The underlined words are what we call the verbs. They


are all in the simple present tense. The subject used in
each sentence is singular that is why the verb has an
–s or -es at the end.
1. Danica and Jessica pick roses in their garden and bring them to
the church in their barangay.
2. Dr. Susie and Dr. Ramon work as front liners in a hospital.
3. The animal trainers train dogs to be used for guiding the
elderly.
4. My mother and I bake cookies and sell them to raise money for
the street children.
5. Our English and Filipino teachers teach us how to write a
paragraph every day

The subject used in each sentence is plural


that is why the verb doesn’t end in -s or -es.
It is in the base form.
Use the correct simple present tense to complete the sentence.

When do we use the simple present
tense of the verb?

The simple present tense of the verb is


used to express an action
that happens regularly or habitually. It also
expresses a fact or a general
truth.
