Give a rule/s inside your
house that must be followed
strictly
Answer the following questions
1. What would the consequence be for
failure to observe the rule?
2. Do you follow or obey that rule because
of fear of punishment? Why?
Laws of the Old Testament
◦ Exodus 21:23-25 "But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for
life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn
for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."
◦ Leviticus 24:19-21 "Anyone who injures their neighbor is to be
injured in the same manner: fracture for fracture, eye for eye,
tooth for tooth. The one who has inflicted the injury must suffer
the same injury."
The New Law
◦ Matthew 5:38
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth
for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if
anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if
anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as
well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second
mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse
anyone who wants to borrow from you.
Law of Love
Matthew 22:24-30
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees
they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further
question, 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus
said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with
all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first
commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour
as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the
Prophets too.'
The New Law=Law of Love
◦ Does not call for legalistic observance but rather a filial one.
◦ Not an external show but the “quality of the heart” that matters
◦ Christian moral life is not following the laws but the spirit of
the law
◦ The spirit of the Law speaks of the true reason and purpose of
the law in accordance with the will of God
The Beatitudes
◦ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(Verse 3)
◦ Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land. (Verse 4)
◦ Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
◦ Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have
their fill. (Verse 6)
The Beatitudes
◦ Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
◦ Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
◦ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the
children of God. (Verse 9)
◦ Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)
The Beatitudes
◦ The new law of Christ is the Law of Love, the law of the kingdom
of God
◦ Jesus promised a unique type of happiness to those who live out the
beatitudes: To inherit the kingdom of God, to possess the Earth, to
be a child of God, to receive mercy, and to see God
◦ Love one another, solidarity, and fidelity to God and to one another
are the outlined three dimensions to respond in God’s kingdom
