1. Subject
The subject is the noun group that comes before the

2. Verb
Verbs can be classified as 1. verb to be (be, seem, become) & verb to do 2. transitive verbs (follow by an object) e.g. I read novels. Sue plays piano. 3. intransitive verbs (do not have a direct object) e.g. Kelly coughs. Kenneth died.
3. Object
An object is the noun group which follows the verb of
doing. Examples: 1. Jacob collects stamps. (object) 2. Allan created a story. (object)
4. Complement
A Complement is the Adjective or Adverb which
follows the verb of being Examples: 1. Peter was brave . (Complement) 2. She called her students babies. (Complement)
5. Adverbial
way as an adverb. adverbs of degree (e.g. a lot, very) adverbs of time (e.g. yesterday, before, after) adverbs of place (e.g. at school, in the bedroom) adverbs of frequency (e.g. once, sometimes)
Examples: 1. Before the play, we met up at the theatre. (adverbial) 2. We are going to have a test tomorrow. (adverbial)
Sentence Structures
1. Subject + Verb (SV) - The simplest of sentence patterns - Uses an intransitive verb
e.g. Samantha left. May is sleeping. The sun rises.

2. Subject + Verb + Complement (SVC) - Uses linking verb - Any form of the verb without an action verb
e.g. The idea of the story is difficult. It sounds great. Everybody looks tidy.

3. Subject + Verb + Object (SVO) - Uses the direct object
e.g. Daisy kisses her son. He is eating an ice cream.

4. Subject + Verb + Indirect O + Direct O (S V iO dO)
e.g. Miss Anna gives us tests. I paid you 3500 dollars.

5. Subject + Verb + Object + Complement (SVOC)
e.g. Sammie teaches her son patiently. Chloe made me sad. We called our principal Sr Judith.

6. Subject + Verb + Object + Adverbial (SVOA)
e.g. We fed the cat yesterday. Before the teacher came, they had broken the window. We saw them in the evening.
