First Aid

First aid refers to the immediate care provided to an injured or ill person before full medical treatment can be accessed. It aims to preserve life, prevent further harm, relieve pain and suffering, and promote recovery through techniques like CPR, wound care, fracture stabilization, and assessing vital signs. First aid is not a replacement for professional medical care, but serves as a bridge between injury and the arrival of emergency services. It is a valuable skill that can potentially save lives when properly administered.

FIRST AID

Introduction
First aid is a vital and immediate response to injuries, illnesses, or
distressing situations. It is the initial care provided to a person in need before
professional medical assistance can be reached.
The key goals of first aid are to preserve life, prevent further harm, relieve
pain and suffering, and promote recovery. First aid techniques and skills include a
variety of actions, such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), a wound care,
fracture stabilization, treating burns, assisting choking victims, and assessing vital
signs.
It is crucial to assess the situation for safety, protect unconscious individuals,
and provide emotional support to those in distress. First aid is not a replacement for
professional medical care but serves as the critical bridge between the occurrence of an
injury or illness and the arrival of medical professionals. It is a valuable set of skills
that anyone can learn to make a difference in emergency situations, potentially saving
lives and reducing the severity of injuries.

FIRST AID
First aid refers to the immediate and initial assistance or care provided to a person who has been injured, become ill, or is in distress before professional medical help or emergency services
arrive. The primary objectives of first aid are to preserve life, prevent further harm, provide relief from pain and suffering, and promote recovery.

First aid encompasses a range of basic medical techniques and procedures, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), wound care, fracture stabilization, managing burns, choking
response, and assessing vital signs. It also involves assessing the situation for safety, protecting the unconscious, and ensuring the psychological well-being of the injured or unwell person.

First aid can be administered by trained individuals, such as first responders, medical professionals, or the general public with basic first aid training. It plays a crucial role in increasing
the chances of survival and reducing the severity of injuries or illnesses in emergency situations
What is the Good Samaritan law for first aiders?
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2023

Good Samaritan laws protect bystanders who step forward in an emergency situation to
help, with no expectation of reward.

Good Samaritan laws protect first aiders who act in the same way another similarly
trained, reasonable and prudent person would in the same situation. Use your common sense and
stay within what you were trained to do, and you cannot be held responsible for the injuries
suffered by the injured person.

A Good Samaritan who acts in good faith to any emergency where other persons are in
danger, without guilt, misconduct, or compensation, takes steps to provide help or assistance to any
person who is in danger, is wounded, or otherwise requires immediate medical treatment, shall not
be held civilly or criminally liable .

What is CPR?
S U N D A Y, F E B R U A R Y 7 , 2 0 X X

CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It can

help save a life during cardiac arrest, when the heart
stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate
blood to the brain and other vital organs.
What Is the Purpose of CPR?
With a half-million cardiac arrests each year, CPR
increases the likelihood of surviving cardiac arrest,
when the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively
to circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs.
It’s not just for healthcare workers and emergency

responders. CPR can double or triple the chance of

survival when bystanders take action. The Red Cross
helps train you safely, effectively and confidently so
you’re prepared for the moments that matter.

Why is CPR Important?

CPR should be used when you see someone who is
unresponsive and is not breathing or only gasping.
Having more bystanders trained in this simple skill can
help save lives by putting more cardiac arrest victims

Benefits to Being CPR Certified

•An Emergency Can Happen When You Least Expect It.

No one ever expects emergencies to occur as they go about their day, which is why it is important to learn CPR ahead of time. Cardiac arrest can
happen at home, at school, at the gym, on an airplane, in the workplace or anywhere in the community. CPR is a critical skill that can help save
a life when a person's breathing or heart stops.

Every Second Counts.
You may be wondering, "why learn CPR when I can just call 9-1-1?" While you should always call 9-1-1 first in the event of an emergency, it
still takes rescuers some time to arrive at the scene. For every minute without intervention, the chance of survival drops for a person
experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. CPR can significantly improve someone’s chance of surviving when bystanders take prompt action.

CPR Also Prevents Brain Death.
Even if someone survives cardiac arrest, they may suffer permanent brain damage when they don't receive enough blood flow and oxygen to the
brain. CPR certification can help prevent brain damage and death by keeping oxygenated blood moving throughout the body.

Anyone Can Learn It.
Another benefit of CPR is that this lifesaving training is for everyone. It only takes a few hours, and it can give you the skills and confidence to
act in an emergency and help save a life. You'll find classes that are designed for the way you live and learn, with options available on weekdays
and weekends in a variety of formats.

You'll Have the Confidence to Act when Needed.
CPR instruction will give you the skills and confidence to perform this life-saving procedure when it's needed the most. Plus, to keep your skills
fresh, online refresher materials are available that can help you retain the knowledge you've gained. In addition, you'll also have access to a
printable list of the basic steps for performing CPR. This way, you can keep the information you need right at your fingertips.

What is Choking?
F R I D A Y, O C T O B E R 1 3 , 2 0 2 3

Choking is when a person can't speak, cough, or

breathe because something is blocking (obstructing)
the airway. No air can get through. If the airway stays
blocked, it can lead to a loss of consciousness and
death.

To keep from breathing in a normal way by

compressing or obstructing the trachea or by
poisoning or adulterating available air.

infant passes out, tell 911 immediately.

•If you don't have a dressing you can ask the casualty to do this
themselves.
•If the wound is covered by the casualty's clothing, remove or
cut the clothes to uncover the wound.

•Rinse the cut or wound with water and apply pressure with
sterile gauze, a bandage, or a clean cloth. If blood soaks through
the bandage, put another bandage on top of the first and keep
applying pressure. Raise the injured body part to slow bleeding.
When bleeding stops, cover the wound with a new, clean
bandage.
