P - Longitude and Time NOTES

The document discusses how time changes around the world due to time zones and differences in longitude. It explains that the Earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours. As you move west from the Prime Meridian, you subtract an hour for every 15 degrees of longitude. As you move east, you add an hour. Local time is defined by time zones, which generally follow longitude lines but can vary based on political boundaries.

Today’s Objective:

How Does Time Change Around the World?

• How many hours does it take

for the Earth to rotate 360o ?

• How many degrees does it

rotate per hour?
Local Time

• Local time is the time in a

particular region or time
zone
Time Zones

• A time zone is a region that has a uniform

time for legal, commercial, and social
purposes.

• Time zones are loosely based on longitude,

but tend to follow political boundaries.
• Time zones start at the Prime
Meridian and end at the
International Date Line

0o Longitude

International Date Line

(the day changes)

180o Longitude
• As you move WEST from Oo longitude you
must subtract an hour for every 15 o of
Longitude

West – Subtract 1 hr
• As you move EAST from Oo longitude you
must Add an hour for every 15 o of Longitude

East – Add 1 hr West – Subtract 1 hr

NOW TRY THESE . . .
1. How many degrees Longitude is equal to 1 hour?

2. If it is 12 Noon at 0° longitude, what time is it at 60° W?

3. If it is 12 Noon at 0° longitude, what time is it at 30° W?

4. If it is 12 Noon at 0° longitude, what time is it at 45° E?
