IUPAC name: poly-1,1-difluoroethene Other names: polyvinylidene difluoride, KYNAR, HYLAR, SOLEF, SYGEF Molecular formula -(C2H2F2)n Appearance: whitish or translucent

Mechanical properties

PVDF membrane

Preparation method
Techniques : Water precipitation Water vapour absorption Thermal gelation Solvent evaporation Mostly used = water precipitation

Preparation method
Polymer Solution(PVDF + N,N-dimethylacetamide)

Casting(using hand-casting knife)

Precipitation(immersed in water bath)

Annealing(at 160C)

ADVANTAGES
Advantage better protein retention, physical strength and broad chemical compatibility shown to have better retention of total HIV antigens and improved detection of antibodies to glycosylated envelope antigens replicate lanes from a single gel can be used for various applications WESTERN BLOTTING TEST

PURIFICATION AND SEPERATION OF AQUEOUS SOLUTION

LIMITATION

Low surface energy

It is because due to strong hydrophobic nature of PVDF, therefore the pure water flux is usually low.

Susceptible to fouling while treat with solution contain natural organic

It is because natural organic like protein are prone to be easily absorbed onto the membrane surface and block the membrane pores. The lifetime of membrane will depressing and subsequently causing more operation costs of the replacement and maintenance of the membrane modules.

Current Status and Development

Consider as pure polymer (suitable for biomedical and bioseparation applications). Can be crosslinked when subjected to electron beam radiation or gamma radiation. Have great potential in separation due to its chemical and physical properties.

Limitation

Development (Surface Modification)

Low surface energy

Surface coating

Easily become fouling when aqueous solution containing natural organic is used

Surface grafting

Application
Used in Western blotting Application in air-coupled transducer calibration Use in variety of staining applications and reprobing in immunodetection Suitable for wastewater treatment
