Lesson 3 Average Speed and Velocity

This document provides an overview of a science lesson on forces and motion. It introduces key concepts like speed, which is distance traveled over time, and velocity, which includes both speed and direction of motion. Formulas for calculating speed, average speed, and velocity are presented. Sample problems demonstrate how to use the formulas to find speed, average speed, and displacement given values for distance, time, and velocity.

FORCES AND
MOTION

Week 2
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learner is expected to:
describe the motion of an object in terms of
speed and velocity
differentiate speed from velocity; and
solve problems involving of speed, and
velocity.

REVIEW TIME!!!!
Word Cloud Making
1. For 3 minutes, create a Word Cloud about
Motion.
2. This should be composed of at least 8
words/phrases.
3. After 3 minutes, post your word clouds in our

FORCE AND MOTION
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

• Speed is the distance traveled divided by the
time interval during which the motion
occurred

• Normally, objects do not travel at a constant

speed. It’s always instantaneous.
• Instantaneous speed is the speed in an instant.
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

• Average Speed - total distance
total time
• In symbols
• Units used for speed are
meters/second (m/s)
kilometers/hour (k/hr or kph)
miles/hour (mi/hr)

Sample Exercises
1. It took 2.50 hr for a car to travel a distance of
150 km. What is its average speed?
G: distance= 150km
time = 2.50 hr
U: speed
F:
S:
A: s = 60 km/hr or 60 kph

Sample Exercise
2. If Cathy, Myra and Eva all take 2.0 hr to walk from
their house to their school at a rate of 1.0 m/s, how far is
their school from the house?
G: t = 2.0 hr = 7,200 s
s = 1.0 m/s
U: distance
F: d = s x t
S: d = 1.0 x 7,200 s
d=
A: d = 7,200 m

VELOCITY
FORCE AND MOTION
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

Velocity is the speed of an object in a particular
direction
Imagine two birds leave the same tree at the
same time. The both fly at 10km/hr for 5
minutes. Why don’t they end up at the same
place?

SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

• Velocity appears to be very similar to speed,
however, when describing the velocity of an
object you need to provide a magnitude and a
direction
• Magnitude – the speed of the object
• Direction – the direction the object is moving
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

• Velocity - displacement
time
• In symbols v

You can also use the speed
triangle to determine the
• Units used for velocity are correct formula to be used.
Just change speed with
meters/second (m/s) velocity.

Sample Exercise 1
A Philippine Airlines plane regularly takes off
from Manila at 5:30 am and is expected to land
in Zamboanga, 852 km south of Manila, at
exactly 7:00 am. What should be the average
velocity of the plane if it is to land in
Zamboanga City on time?
SCIENCE 7 – THIRD QUARTER

Force and Motion

G: d = 852 km South
t = 1.50 hr
U: velocity
F: v
S: v
A: v = 568 km/hr

Sample Exercise 2
A motorbike cruises down a straight northbound
highway at a constant velocity of 10 m/s for 30 s. What
is the displacement of the motorbike?
G: v = 10 m/s
t = 30s
U: displacement
F: d = v x t
S: d = 10 x 30 s
d = 300
A: 300 m N
