PPP-Eclipse-E05 Module 03 Co Channel Opperation

1) Co-channel dual polarization uses different polarizations for each link to provide double the capacity on the same radio channel. 2) It requires paired RAC 40s connected to a dual-polarized antenna with XPIC providing an additional 20dB of polarization discrimination. 3) The document discusses configuration requirements for the paired RAC 40s to support co-channel operation, including using the same frequency, transmit power, and capacity.

RAC40 AND RAC4X

CO-CHANNEL MODULE

Company Confidential 1
Co-Channel Dual Polarization
Parallel-path CCDP operation with XPIC provides double the capacity on the same
radio channel by using different polarizations for each link

Requires paired RAC 40s / ODU 300s connected to a dual-polarized antenna

XPIC typically provides an additional 20dB of polarization discrimination

Co-Channel Dual Polarization
Contd

Co-channel operation is supported for capacities of:

• 52x E1, 64x E1, 75x E1, or STM1 on a channel
bandwidth (mask) of 27.5 / 28 MHz

Requires ODU 300ep or ODU 300hp

Paired RAC 40s must be configured for the same

frequency, Tx power, capacity/modulation

Paired RAC 40s are usually installed in two co-located INU/INUe’s to

avoid backplane bus capacity limitations

For protected operation, the protection partners must be installed in

the same INU/INUe

Backplane Capacity: Single INU
The backplane of an INU/INUe supports maximum bus
capacities of 100x E1, or 2x STM1

The RAC 40 co-channel capacity options are 52/64/75x E1,

or STM1, which means:
• Only STM1 can be used co-channel on a single INU (for a combined 2x
STM1 capacity) and then only for a terminal/edge Node
• The Nx E1 co-channel capacities are not viable on a single INU because
they exceed the backplane maximums
• Similarly Nx E1 co-channel ring protected networks are not viable using
a single INUe at each ring site

Path Capacity: Co-located INU/INUe
Two co-located INUs support linear (star) network operation up to
the over-air maximums provided by a RAC 40: 75x E1, or STM1,
for combined co-path capacities of:
• 150x E1
• 2x STM1

For single-gateway ring-protected networks, the Eclipse

backplane limits combined total path capacities to maximums
of:
• 128x E1

For multiple gateway (any-to-any) ring-protected networks, the

combined total path capacities for four-node rings & larger can
be up to the over-air maximums of:
• 150x E1

RAC 40 Configuration
Where two RAC 40s are installed for co-channel XPIC link operation they must
be configured as two independent RACs; there are no common RAC settings
• For co-channel operation each must be configured for identical frequency, Tx
power, capacity/bandwidth options
• Capacity options are restricted to 52/64/75x E1, & STM1
• ATPC must not be used

• The plug-ins screen is as for a RAC 30 but includes a Polarization Settings

panel
– The panel prompts for polarization (vertical or horizontal), and the location of the
partner RAC 40
– The entries are purely informational - they do not affect link operation

Antenna Alignment
For CCDP XPIC links antenna feeds must be correctly aligned to achieve
optimum XPIC performance

While a dual-feed antenna may be specified with a cross polarization

discrimination of 30 dB, unless the antenna-to-antenna alignment over a
link is correct, the effective discrimination can be significantly less
• The horizontal-to-vertical receive signal discrimination between antenna feeds
must not be less than 25 dB over the link. Ideally it should be up towards 30
dB.
• High performance shielded antennas typically exhibit 30 dB cross polarization
discrimination whereas 40 dB is typical for purpose-designed, high polarization
discrimination antennas
• Antenna feed alignment between antennas must be checked/set to maximize
the discrimination provided by the antennas
