Quarter 2 Week 2 in Science-For COT

The menstrual cycle has four phases: the menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase. During the menstrual phase, the uterine lining breaks down and bleeding occurs. In the follicular phase, the lining repairs and an egg matures. Ovulation occurs around day 14 when an egg is released. In the luteal phase, the lining thickens to prepare for potential fertilization and implantation. On average, the full cycle lasts 28 days.

to female
Based on the

many days is
the menstrual
cycle?
What is menstrual cycle?

The menstrual cycle is a series of phases that the female’s

body experiences once a month to prepare for a possible
pregnancy. Learning about these phases is important because it is
one of the changes that occur in a female’s body during puberty
and so that you’re better equipped to identify fertility signs that
indicate how close you are to ovulation. Having knowledge about
menstruation also helps females manage their hygiene. On
average, a woman’s menstrual cycle will last for 28 days. The
cycle begins on the first day of your period.
Menstrual Phase: This
phase begins on the first
day of menstruation and
typically lasts until the 5th
day of your cycle. During
the menstrual phase, the
uterus sheds soft tissue and
blood vessels from its inner
lining.
Follicular Phase: The
uterine lining starts to
thicken again. Days 6 -
13 is a repair period for
the uterine lining and
development period for
an egg to mature.
Ovulation Phase: Around the
14th day of your cycle,
ovulation occurs. The
pituitary gland secretes the
luteinizing hormone (LH) that
causes the release of the
matured egg cell from the
ovary. The egg cell the travels
to the fallopian tube with the
help of the cilia of the
fimbriae, finger-like
projections located at the end
of the fallopian tube.
Luteal Phase: The luteal
phase begins around day 15
and lasts until the end of
your cycle. During this
period the uterus prepares
for a possible fertilization
and implantation by
making the uterine lining
grow and thicken.

Actv. 2: Direction: Read the description carefully and identify which phase of
the menstrual cycle is being referred to? Write your answer on the blank.
____________1. The uterine lining breaks down and

implantation of a zygote.
