Over Head Transmission Line Fault Detection

This document discusses overhead transmission line fault detection. It describes the types of faults that can occur, including line-to-ground and line-to-line faults. It also outlines some common fault detection equipment used, such as current transformers and voltage transformers. Distance protection is discussed as one of the most common and reliable fault detection techniques, using measurements of current and voltage to determine the distance to a fault. Differential protection and traveling wave protection techniques are also mentioned.

OVER HEAD TRANSMISSION LINE FAULT

DETECTION
OVER HEAD TRANSMISSION SYSTEM

• Overhead transmission system are

essential for the transmission of electricity
from generating stations to consumers.
• However, they are also sensitive to faults
caused by a variety of factors, including
lightning strikes, windstorms, and
equipment failure .
TYPES OF FAULT

There are several types of fault which are occurs in overhead

transmission system.
Some most commonly occurred faults are:-
a. L-G Fault(Line to Ground Fault about 65%-75%)
b. LLG Fault (Line to Line Fault 10%-20%)

LLLG or LLL Fault is most severe fault and it is about 2%-5%.

OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINE
FAULT DETECTION EQUIPMENT

• There is a variety of overhead transmission line fault

detection equipment available. The most common
types of equipment include:-
• Current transformers (CTs)
• Voltage transformers (VTs)
• Relays
• Circuit Breakers etc.
OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINE FAULT
DETECTION TECHNIQUES

• Distance Protection :- This technique uses measurements of current and

voltage to determine the distance to a fault.
• Differential protection :- This technique compares the currents flowing into
and out of a section of line to detect a fault within that section.
• Traveling wave protection :- This technique detects and locates faults by
analyzing the propagation of traveling waves on the line.
DISTANCE PROTECTION TECHNIQUE

• It is one of the most common and reliable methods of fault protection for
overhead transmission lines.
• In this, the protection relays operate by comparing the measured impedance
of the line to a set of pre-defined impedance zone or values.
• For example- If the measured impedance falls within the innermost
impedance value, the fault is known to be located within a short distance of
the relay.
BASIC CIRCUIT ARRANGEMENT

• Here considering network of

power system which shows
the basic arrangement of
distance protection scheme
having different impedance
zones.
Merits Demerits
• Security • Complexity
• Speed • Cost
• Selectivity • Maloperation

• Overall distance protection is a very reliable and effective method of fault protection for
overhead transmission lines.

It is widely used by utilities around the world.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and smart grids will results in the improved
performance of the distance protection system.
