Flared Gas Recovery Solution

This document discusses gas flaring and solutions for flared gas recovery. It begins by defining gas flaring as the burning of natural gas from oil extraction. It then outlines the composition and process of gas flaring. The document notes that the amount of flared gas could power sub-Saharan Africa. It discusses reasons for gas flaring and the disadvantages of flaring, including pollution. The document presents solutions for flared gas recovery like gas injection and provides factors to consider. It acknowledges challenges to recovery like technical difficulties and profitability concerns. In conclusion, it states that utilizing produced gas instead of flaring can solve energy and environmental issues.

OUTLINE
WHAT IS GAS FLARING?
COMPOSITION/PROCESS OF FLARE GAS
WHY GAS FLARING?
DISADVANTAGES OF GAS FLARING
FLARED GAS RECOVERY SOLUTION AND
FACTORS TO CONSIDER
CHALLENGES AND LIMITATIONS OF FLARED
GAS RECOVERY
CONCLUSION
1
WHAT IS GAS
FLARING?
Flaring is the process of wasting valuable natural resources that should either
be used for productive purposes such as generating power. Therefore, it is
defined as the burning of natural gas associated with oil extraction.
The practice has persisted since the beginning of oil production over 160
years ago
The amount of gas currently flared each year is about 140 billion cubic meters
which could power the whole of sub-Saharan Africa

2
COMPOSITION OF PROCESS OF GAS
FLARE GAS FLARING
GAS FLARING CONSTITUENT GAS FLARING(%)

METHANE 43.6
PROPANE 20.3
ISOBUTANE 14.3
CARBONDIOXIDE 0.713
HYDROGEN SULPHIDE 0.256
HYDROGEN 5.54
OXYGEN 0.357
NITROGEN 1.3
WATER 1.14

3
WHY DO WE FLARE
GAS?
In industrial plants
In oil and gas extraction sites

4
DISADVANTAGES OF GAS FLARING
Toxic nature
 Polluting water and earth
Relatively expensive storge
Costly pipeline

5
FLARED GAS RECOVERY SOLUTION
Gas injection
Thermal injection
Chemical injection

6
CHALLENGES AND LIMITATION OF
FLARED GAS RECOVERY
The technical difficulties involved in capturing and processing flared gas
The fact that some oil companies may not see gas recovery as a profitable
venturer

7
CONCLUSION
There are different ways the produced gas can be used instead of discarding it
by flaring. Utilizing the gas in a safer way can solve the problems of energy
generation, greenhouse effects and also create a safer environment. The
produced gas can serve different purposes instead of being flared.
