which each speech style is appropriate to use; •2. Analyze speech styles used in scenarios/situations; and •3. Create appropriate speech style. SPEECH STYLE Speech Style is the form of language that the speaker uses which characterized by the degree of formality. (Martin Joos (1976:156) Our manner or style of speaking or communicating should vary depending on the occasion, audience, subject matter and the purpose of communication. TYPES OF SPEECH STYLE 1.Frozen Style 2.Intimate Style 3.Formal Style 4.Casual Style 5.Consultative Style FROZEN STYLE Also known as fixed speech, it is the highest form of communicative style which is often used in respectful situations or formal ceremonies like Shakespearean plays, weddings, funerals, pledges, anthems, laws and more. It uses the complex grammatical sentence structure and vocabulary that are only known by experts in that field. FORMAL STYLE Inform and captivate audience Generally used in formal situation, where there is the least amount of shared background and the communication in this style is largely one way with little or no feedback from the audience. Scripted speech CONSULTATIVE STYLE It is basically unplanned speech since the speaker uses the participation and feedback of the listener. The speaker will supply background information, while again, the listener participates continuously. CONSULTATIVE STYLE • Happens in two-way participation. • It is used in negotiating with the strangers or work colleagues. • Used in small group discussion and in business- like situations. CASUAL STYLE Also known as informal style, it is usually used between, friends, or even insiders who have things to share. In this type, there is a free and easy participation of both speaker and listener. Slangs are quite often used in these instances. INTIMATE STYLE • used in talks between two very close individuals. • Also free and easy participation. • Language used is not public. • Certain terms of endearment, slangs or expressions whose meaning is shared with a small subset of person to person.
