THE DEFINITION AND ROLE OF
CREATIVITY
Creativity:
• The ability to generate new, original ideas or solutions.
• Involves unique perspectives and unconventional outcomes.
• Expressed across various domains: art, science, problem-solving.
• Creativity is the most important part of being innovative as it initiates the process.
• Creative idea which in turn becomes an innovation would result in the improved efficiency/effectiveness of the system.
• Creativity is wasted if there is no process in place to take ideas and turn them into something that has market potential.
Innovation:
•Transforming ideas into tangible, useful outcomes.
•Emphasizes implementation and application.
•Can improve efficiency, competitiveness, and value.
• Innovation is the application of new solutions that meet new requirements, inarticulate needs, or existing market needs.
• This is accomplished through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or ideas that are readily available
to markets, governments and society.
• Innovation differs from invention in that innovation refers to the use of a better and, as a result, novel idea or method,
whereas invention refers more directly to the creation of the idea or method itself.
• Innovation differs from improvement in that innovation refers to the notion of doing something different rather than doing
the same thing better.
BARRIERS TO
INNOVATION
• In the 2019-2020 survey, Australian Bureau of Statistics found factors impacting on their
ability to develop or introduce new services and products, processes and methods.
• A total of 17 industries were surveyed about the following factors that hamper innovation:
1. Lack of access to additional funds.
2. Cost of development or introduction / implementation.
3. Lack of skilled persons in the market
4. Lack of access to enabling knowledge.
5. Lack of access to enabling technology.
6. Government regulations and compliance.
7. Adherence to standards.
8. Uncertain demands for news goods or services.
ETHICS IN CREATIVITY AND
INNOVATION
• Definition: Ethical considerations in the realm of creativity and innovation
pertain to the principles and values that guide the development,
implementation, and dissemination of new ideas and solutions.
Importance:
1. Ensuring Fairness and Respect for Original Ideas:
• Encourages more individuals to share and develop their unique ideas without fear.
1. Foundational Principles:
• Tawhid (Oneness of God): All creative capabilities and knowledge ultimately derive from the singular source,
Allah.
• Ijtihad (Independent Reasoning): An Islamic juridical tool that allows for interpretation and innovation in
understanding the Quran and Hadith.
• Ihsan (Excellence): Encourages Muslims to strive for excellence in all endeavors, including creativity and
innovation.
2. Historical Precedence:
• Golden Age of Islam: Period between the 8th and 13th centuries marked by advancements in various sciences,
arts, and philosophy due to creative and innovative thinking.
• Prominent Figures: Al-Khwarizmi (mathematics), Ibn Sina (medicine), Al-Farabi (philosophy).
3. Modern Implications:
• Halal Innovation: Creative solutions that adhere to Islamic principles, like halal-certified products or Islamic
finance innovations.
• Balancing Tradition and Progress: Ensuring that new ideas and solutions align with the teachings and values
of Islam while propelling society forward.
