IT Utility Softawre

This document summarizes different types of utility software: 1. Anti-virus software monitors systems for viruses and malware, preventing execution and damage to files. It scans for existing threats and allows users to disinfect, quarantine, or ignore affected areas. 2. Backup utilities create copies of stored data and programs that can be backed up automatically or selected by the user. 3. Data compression utilities reduce file sizes, requiring less storage space and allowing faster transfers. 4. Disk defragmentation utilities reorganize files so that each file is stored contiguously rather than split across gaps on disks.

Types of
Utility Software
01. Anti-Virus
Anti-Virus
Anti-virus software, also known as
antimalware software, monitors systems
for viruses and malware, preventing their
execution and preventing damage to files
or programs. It also scans systems for
existing viruses or malware, allowing users
to disinfect affected areas, quarantine
them, or ignore them. Disinfecting
removes the threat but deletes affected
data or programs. Quarantine isolates the
affected area until further checks are
conducted. Ignoring is dangerous and can
lead to unexpected results.
02. Backup
back-up
Backup utilities create a second copy of
stored data and programs, either by the
user or scheduled for automatic execution.
Users can select folders and files to be
backed up.
03. Data compression
Data compression
Data compression utilities reduce file sizes,
reducing storage space. They can be used
on a file-by-file or folder basis, opening
slower but requiring less storage and
faster transfer from one location to
another.
Disk
04. defragmentation
Structure of hard disk storage

A hard-disk drive consists of multiple platters with read-

write heads on each side. These heads move across the
platters, never touching the disk surface, and store data.
Each platter is divided into tracks and sectors, forming a
cylinder on the top platter.
Disc Defragmentation
When files are deleted, gaps are left on the disc.
When all the cylinders have been used, the only
space to store files is within the gaps. If the gaps
are not big enough, then files have to be split
across gaps, meaning that they become
defragmented. A defragmentation utility will
reorganize all the files so that each file is
contiguous (kept together).
05. Formatting
When a disc is prepared for first time use, it needs
to be formatted. Low level formatting prepares
the actual structure of the disk by dividing the
disk into cylinders and tracks and then dividing
the tracks into sectors. This type of formatting is
usually carried out by manufacturers rather than
individual users. When high-level formatting is
carried out, it does not permanently erase data
files but deletes the pointers on the disk that tell
the OS where to find them. High-level formatting
is typically done to erase the hard disk and
reinstall the OS back onto the disk drive.
