What does speed

mean?
Answers:
Motion
when an object changes position
over time relative to a reference
point
Speed
the distance traveled by an object
divided by the time taken to travel
that distance
The SI (System
International) unit for Speed:

Meter per second= m/s

Speed Formula:
distance
speed =
time
• The sled might travels a distance of 5
meters in 1 second.
This means that the sled travels a distance of
5 meters in 1 second.
As it nears the bottom of the hill, the sled
might be moving at a speed of about 15
m/s.
Calculating Speed
Example #1
Suppose you drove a distance of 3
kilometers in 1 hour while in heavy
traffic. Then, it took you 1 hour to drive
50 kilometers from one side of a city to
the other. Finally, you travelled 211
kilometers on an interstate highway in 2
hours. The average speed is the total
distance traveled by the total time.
Solve for the speed
• Total Distance= 3 km+ 50 km+ 211
km=264 km

• Total Time= 1 h +1h+2h= 4h

• Average speed= Distance / time

• =264 km / 2 h
• = 66 km/h
Instantaneous vs Average Speed

Instantaneous Speed:
●The speed at any instant is called Average Speed:
the instantaneous speed.
●The average speed is the total
●Speedometers show distance covered divided by the
instantaneous speed time.
●If you have looked at the
speedometer for a moment in a
traffic jam, it might have 5
kilometers per hour
Calculating Speed
Example #2

A racecar at the Daytona 500

zips around the track. It travels
the first 80 kilometers in 0.4
hours. The next 114 kilometers
take 0.6 hours. The following 80
kilometers take 0.4 hours.
Calculate the racecar’s average
speed.

Example #3
An athlete swims a distance from one
end of a 50 meter (m) pool to the
other end in 25 seconds (s). What is
the athlete’s average speed?

d 50 m
s= s= s = 2 m/s
t 25 s

Using the formula for

speed, how could you
calculate distance? time?
Speed Triangle

Cover one up and it gives you the formula

that you need to find the one you’re hiding!
Calculating Distance
Example #4
Juanita cycles at an average speed of 7
mph. If she cycles for 5.5 hours, how
far does he travel?

d=sxt
d = 7 x 5.5
d = 38.5 miles
Calculating Time
Example #5
Emma drives at an average speed of 45
mph on a journey of 135 miles(mi). How
long does Emma’s journey take?

d 135 mi
t= t=
s 45 mph
t = 3 hours
Solve the following problem:
1.Mrs. Dein walks her dog 2.5 miles
everyday. It takes her approximately
0.75 hour. What is her average speed?

A. 1.88 miles/hour…
B. 0.3 miles/hour…
C. 3.33 miles/hour…

Question 1: What is the average speed

Average Speed of a biker who travels 10 meters in 2
seconds?

Distance Question 2: How far does a biker go in

10 seconds if he is moving at 3 m/s?

Time Question 3: How long does it take for a

biker to travel 100 m if she is going
5m/s?

the speed of an object in a
particular direction

same
formula as d
speed v=
t
+ direction!

Give the difference of

speed and velocity and
give an example
Importance of describing velocity of
moving objects
• Air traffic controllers must keep close
track of the velocities of aircrafts.
These velocities change as airplanes
move overhead and on runways. An
error in determining a velocity, either
in speed or in direction, could lead to
collision.
To do:
How can understanding
velocity help to prevent a
mid-air collision?
To do:
How can understanding

Determine whether they are
heading toward one another and
how quickly they are moving
Calculating Velocity
Example #6
Calculate the velocity of a mountain
climber if that climber is moving northeast
at a pace of 1.6 km in 1.4 hours.

d 1.6 km
v= v= v ≈ 1.14 km/hr
t 1.4 hr northeast
this makes it velocity

Example #7
A roller coaster car rapidly picks up speed as it
rolls down a slope. As it starts down the slope,
its speed is 4 m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the
bottom of the slope, its speed is 22 m/s. What
is its average acceleration?
