The Present Continuous Tense

What is she doing?
• She is reading a book.
What is she doing?

• She is crying.
Where is he going?
• He is going to school.
Form:Subject+ to be(simple present)+ verb +ing
Use : we use the present continuous tense to talk about
an action happening at the moment of speaking.
Affirmative
I am learning English now.
He/she/it is learning English now.
You/we/they are learning English now.
Negative
I am not (I’m not) learning Arabic at the moment.
He/she/it is not (isn’t) learning Arabic at the moment.
You/we/they are not (aren’t) learning Arabic at the moment.
Interrogative
Am I learning English ?
Is he/she/it learning English ?
Are you/we/they learning English ?
Short answers
Yes, I am/he is/we are…
No, I’m not/he isn’t/we aren’t…
Rules
Some verbs drop Verbs ending in –ie, Some verbs double
the last -e: drop the –ie + –y + ing the last letter:
write  writing sit  sitting
lie lying swim  swimming
take  taking
die  dying
dance  dancing travel  travelling
but see  seeing shop  shopping
but open  opening
What is she doing?

Affirmative : She is reading a book.


Negative: She is not reading a book.
Interrogative : is she reading a book ?
What is he doing?
He / listen / music

Affirmative : He is listening to music.


Negative: He is not listening to music.
Interrogative: is He listening to music?
What are they doing?

They / study /English

Affirmative : They are studying English.


Negative: They are not studying English.
Interrogative: Are they studying English?
Exercise 1 :Fill in the blanks with the present
continuous of the verbs in brackets:
