Topic 1.2 Simple & Compound Statements

This document defines logic, statements, and different types of statements. It defines logic as the study of truth and valid reasoning. A statement is any sentence that can be true or false. A simple statement conveys one idea, while a compound statement connects two or more statements with logical connectives like "and", "or", and "if...then". LOGICS
• Logic is the study of TRUTH and how we can
obtain universal truths through mathematical
deduction. It is the most basic language of
mathematics, and the underlying principle of
proof.
• Logic is traditionally defined as the study of the
laws of thought or correct reasoning and is usually
understood in terms of inferences or arguments.
• The study of the principles and criteria of valid
inference and demonstration.
• The study of how conclusions follow from
premises due to the structure of arguments alone,
independent of their topic and content.
