Title: By: Whom? And? Stating
Automated 3-Phase Pump Controller by:

A report submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Industrial Electronics Studies at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology Malta June 2009

Date (month & year):

The Abstract:
The abstract is not a chapter of the main text, but is a one page overview of the entire project. This is the page of your work that will be read most! The abstract is usually around 10 to 20 lines, where each line has 10 to 15 words. Around 15 lines is the ideal. The abstract should include the following information: What is project about? Why did I choose it? Final objective/s of project, where to arrive at? Project bounded/scoped (how far to arrive).

The Abstract. Example:

Abstract
The project consists of the design and construction of an automated 3-phase pump controller. This is essentially an electronic, closed-loop control system utilizing programmable logic controller (PLC) technology.
My interest in this field of research is a result of earlier student work carried out on pump efficiency testing. Over 10% of the national energy consumption is utilized by various pumping systems and techniques. Globally, pump efficiency is still an evolving field. The main objective of this project is to utilize PLC technology, identified by my research as the most recent and effective, to automate and fully control the speed of a 3-phase, 10Kw pump. The project shall include the design of the control system through use of digital electronic circuitry, particularly the EI233 chip set, and the programming of the system through the adoption of PLC macro-programming techniques. Construction and site testing of the system shall also be a requisite of the project.

Following the Abstract, the Declaration of Authenticity:

This directly follows the abstract page, and is also not part of the main text.
DECLARATION OF AUTHENTICITY

I (we), the undersigned, declare that the report entitled:

Automated 3-Phase Pump Controller is authentic in so far as it is the result of my (our) own study and research and that any conclusions, statements, recommendations or assumptions are mine (ours) unless otherwise stated.

This page will follow you for life!

The Literature Review

Chapter 2

Justify the WHY? Of the project. Anything from 10 to 45 pages, graphics included. This should be completed first, i.e. before chapter 1. The review should delve into the following points: Existing technology/literature/usage Previous studies/research/developments/projects Research & reading on components/parts/sub-systems Research on applicability/environment/necessity Research on alternatives/options The conceptual framework to be adopted

This chapter is a vital one, and a minimum input of 40 hours should be dedicated towards it. The conceptual framework is a paragraph describing the theory/model/concept that forms the basis of your project. In the previous example, it was the use of a varying 3-phase supply frequency to slow down or speed up a

pump, in accordance to the need of the user, this need being conveyed via closedloop feedback control that changes the frequency setting according to need.
