GLASSWARES
BEAKER – a lipped cylindrical glass container for laboratory use.
FLASKS – a bottle, usually of glass, having a rounded body and a narrow neck, used
especially in laboratory experimentation.
TEST TUBES – a thin glass tube closed at one end, used to hold small amounts of
material for laboratory testing or experiments.
GRADUATED CYLINDER – a narrow, cylindrical container marked with
horizontal lines to represent units of measurement and used to precisely measure the volume
of liquids.
GLASS ROD – stirring rod or stir rod is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix
chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes. They are usually made of solid glass, about
the thickness and slightly longer than a drinking straw, with rounded ends.
AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT
EVAPORATING DISH - a small ceramic dish in which liquids are heated over a flame
so that they evaporate, leaving a solid residue.
WATCH GLASS - a circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as a surface to
evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount of substance,
and as a cover for a beaker.
FUNNEL - a tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used for guiding
liquid or powder into a small opening.
TEST TUBE RACK - are laboratory equipment used to hold upright multiple test tubes
at the same time. They are most commonly used when various different solutions are needed to
work with simultaneously, for safety reasons, for safe storage of test tubes, and to ease the
transport of multiple tubes.
MORTAR AND PESTLE - A device made up of a bowl (the mortar) and a
heavy, blunt object (the pestle), the end of which is used for crushing and
grinding ingredients or substances into a fine paste or powder.
TEST TUBE HOLDER – It is used for holding a test tube in place when the
tube is hot or should not be touched. For example, a test tube holder can be used
to hold a test tube while it is being heated.
IRON RING/CLAMP – Ring clamps connect to a ring stand. They come in
several sizes and have a multitude of uses: holding a separatory funnel during an
extraction, support for a heating mantle, or supporting a glass funnel in gravity
filtration.
CLAMP – A laboratory clamp is an essential piece of
equipment used in a variety of settings for supporting and
securing other items of laboratory apparatus such as flasks,
reaction vessels, tubing, thermometers, probes, columns, funnels
and overhead stirrers.
WIRE GAUZE – diffuses heat from the burner flame to help protect
the glassware from breaking over direct heat.
IRON STAND – is a piece of scientific equipment intended to support
other pieces of equipment and glassware — for instance, burettes, test
tubes and flasks.
SOURCES OF HEAT
ALCOHOL LAMP – An alcohol lamp is used for heating,
sterilization, and combustion in a laboratory. The alcohol lamp uses
ethyl alcohol or spirit as a fuel. It is generally made up of glass, brass or
aluminum.
BUNSEN BURNER – is a type of gas burner that is used in many
chemistry procedures in a laboratory setting. It is used to heat
substances, to combust substances, and to sterilize objects on high heat.
Many different types of gases can be used in a burner such as methane,
butane, propane, or a mixture of them.
