and facts about the cause of its
extinction

Extinction of a particular animal or plant species occurs when there
are no more individuals of that species alive anywhere in the world -
the species has died out.
Animal extinctions may be caused by natural occurrences such as
climatic heating or cooling or changes in sea levels. In more modern
times, however, human activity has been to blame. Habitat destruction
as farming land expands and forests are cut-down is the main cause of
modern extinctions, along with pollution, the introduction of alien
species, and over fishing or hunting. Increasingly, however, climate
change is thought to be driving extinctions.

Baiji White Dolphin
The baiji is one of only a few dolphin
species that is known to have adapted
from the ocean to a freshwater
environment. The likely cause of the
baiji's decline is from the use of fishing
nets with hooks that snag and drown
the dolphins as bycatch. Other causes
may include habitat degradation.

Woolly Mammoth
Precipitation was the cause of the
extinction of woolly mammoths
through the changes to plants. The
change happened so quickly that they
could not adapt and evolve to survive.

Sabre-toothed Cat
It is believed the Sabre-tooth Cat’s
extinction may be linked to the
decline and extinction of the large
herbivores they hunted. Other
explanations include climate change
and competition with humans.

Dodo
The bird was hunted to
extinction by sailors and their
domesticated animals, and
invasive species.

Great Auk
Overhunting threatened the species.
Museums and collectors took an avid
interest in the great auk as its
population declined, but overhunting
and changes to the species'
environment contributed to the
species' extinction.

Steller’s Sea Cow
was wiped out in the second half of
the 18th century due to sailors and fur
traders hunting it for the meat and
fat.

Tasmanian Tiger
It is believed to have been
hunted to extinction – this
was encouraged by bounties –
but human encroachment
into its habitat, the
introduction of dogs and
disease could also have
contributed.

Passenger Pigeon
Their settlement led to mass
deforestation resulting in habitat loss
and a reduction in the bird population.
By the 19th century pigeon meat was
commercialized as a cheap food for
the poor, which resulted in hunting on
a massive scale.

Pyrenean Ibex
its population went through a
bottleneck caused by hunting,
inbreeding and other factors, which
ultimately caused its extinction.

West African Black Rhinoceros
The Western Black Rhino was officially
declared extinct in 2011. Their extinction
was caused mainly by poachers killing
them for their horns, which are highly
prized on the black market and used in
traditional Chinese medicine.
