TYPES
Distinguishing the text types is
simply a matter of determining the
writer’s goal or purpose in writing.
1. NARRATIVE ESSAYS
 It tells a story about
a real-life experience.
 In writing this type of
text, the reader must
be involved by
making the story as
vivid as possible.
“I” sentences give
readers a feeling of
being part of the
story.
EXAMPLE: It was the 4th of
July in Nebraska, America's
Independence Day. As usual
on every Independence Day
since I was five years old,
George and Terry, my two
best friends, and I went on a
picnic…
EXAMPLE: Once there
was a girl who found
some magic M & Ms. She
planted it just outside
her home and when
morning came, it grew
into a giant candy cane.
2. DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS
 This type of text paints
a picture with words.
 A writer might
describe a person,
place, object, or even
memory of personal
significance.
The best descriptive
essays appeal to the
reader’s emotions.
EXAMPLE: I have
five dogs. Dogs are
the best pets. They
are very loving and
helpful. It’s fun to
teach them new
tricks.
3. EXPOSITORY ESSAYS
 This essay is an
informative piece of
writing that presents a
balance analysis of a
topic.
 The writer explains or
defines a topic, using
facts and examples.
 These are based on
facts and not on
personal feelings.
 Writers don’t
reveal their
emotions or write
in the first person
point of view.
EXAMPLE: The energy that
drives the water cycle is
heat. When heat is added
to ice, the ice melts into
water. When heat is added
to water, the water
evaporates, turning from
liquid to gas.
4. PERSUASIVE ESSAYS
 Its purpose is to
convince the reader to
accept the writer’s
point of view.
 The writer must use
facts, examples, expert
opinion, and sound
reasoning.
The writer should
present all sides of the
argument, but must be
able to communicate
clearly why a certain
position is correct.
EXAMPLE: Though cellphones
are necessary for high school
students in terms of their safety,
they should still be prohibited
from use in school. This concept
is founded on several reasons,
distract students by the
possibility to access…

days. What I am talking about here is my
first hike to the mountains.

cause harm because of the
distorted and biased views about
premarital contact. It is time to give
students more comprehensive and
compendious sex education
programs that will better prepare
them for the future.
