Philosophy and Physics – Daniel Fox
•Foundational subjects in Physics (progressed to theoretical physics in last year)
•Philosophy modules in existentialism, political philosophy and epistemology with Dissertation topic on human rights
•Gain a deeper understanding of how the world works and to communicate in a clear and concise fashion – to become a barrister
Chemistry and Philosophy – Diana
•It encourages critical thinking and debate, and also develops skills that might be neglected in a pure science degree such as essay
writing and reading

Computer Science and Philosophy - Steve

• Logic is taught in the first year of both subjects. Philosophy provides a nice, straightforward application of computational thinking (in
Computer Science) to either written or verbal argumentation.
• Modules: Artificial Intelligence (method in CS, ethics in Philosophy) Incompleteness Theorems (procedure in maths and philosophy,
epistemology in Philosophy) Neuroscience (science in psychology, mind and metaphysics in Philosophy).

Mathematics and economics is my favourite combination. The NS department combines different

majors so that students can study in different departments. For example, I spent half my time in
math and half my time in economics. The dean would guide us to make a proper plan in course
selection. Learning two different majors requires frequent switching of thinking modes, and I have
to make more efforts in learning and accept more different kinds of knowledge than a single
discipline. Mathematics students usually write less essays, but I had to read a lot of books to write
essays in economics. And I made more friends than those in a single discipline and had access to
more educational resources. I also had to make more efforts in time management than those in a
single major.

UCAS changes for 2024 entry

Single application fee of £27.50:

UCAS will be simplifying their application fees to support student choice. This decision will enable all applicants to take
advantage of the additional services available, including UCAS Extra, Clearing, and Clearing Plus. This one-off application fee
will mean all UCAS undergraduate applicants can add five choices to their application. The single application fee will no
longer be available.

Changes to the gender question:

promote inclusivity - UCAS is introducing two additional responses in the 2024 cycle.

Student access to grades tool:

help them make informed decisions about their future when narrowing down their application choices - later this year the entry
grades tool will be available on ucas.com, to give students visibility over a range of grade profiles accepted for course entry
over a five-year period (where data is available).

The personal statement will not be changing for 2025 entry.

Changes to references for 2024 entry cycle
UCAS is replacing the free text approach with three structured sections.

Key benefits:
• Built-in clarity and confidence you are providing
information that is useful.
• You have more time and resources to allocate
to students on the discovery/research phase of
their application journey.
• Universities and colleges can easily find
information to make selection decisions and
target support.

UCAS reference examples
for 2024 applications
Three section approach
Section 1 - information could include:
• context of your school, college or centre, e.g. performance, intake demographics, progression rates to higher education etc.
• your portfolio of qualification provision and any restrictions on options students may have.
• information about your school, college or centre which may affect performance.
• any policies or processes used for predicting grades (e.g. internal assessments).

Section 2 - information could include:

 individual circumstances
 context as to why there is a disparity between an individual’s grades achieved throughout the school or college
 factors which have limited the individual’s choice of subjects or load of study at UK Level 3 or equivalent
 support the university or college should consider putting in place to ensure the applicant can thrive on their course (with applicant’s
consent)

Section 3 - information could include:

 evidence of suitability for the course(s) applied for which may include performance and academic ability in relevant UK Level 3 or
equivalent qualifications, relevant work experience, cases where an applicant is the strongest performer in their cohort, or
extracurricular achievements
 any barriers the applicant has faced in accessing work experience opportunities, only where relevant to the course applied to
2024 entry key dates

2 May 2023 - UCAS’ search tool displays 2024 courses.

16 May 2023 - Undergraduate applications open for 2024 entry.

5 September 2023 - Completed undergraduate applications can be submitted to UCAS.

16 October 2023 18:00 (UK time) - Deadline for applications to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and
for most courses in medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine / science.

31 January 2024 18:00 (UK time) - Equal consideration date for applications for most undergraduate courses.
The reference must be completed before the application can be sent to UCAS.

28 February 2024 - Extra opens – applicants who have used all five choices and are not holding any offers may
be able to add another choice in their application.

30 June 2024 18:00 (UK time) - Applications received by this deadline will be sent to universities and colleges.
After this time, applications are automatically entered into Clearing.
