General Physics 1 Measurement L - A 1

The document discusses measurement units and conversions between metric and English systems of measurement. It provides conversion factors for common units of length, mass, time and other quantities. The document also introduces scientific notation as a shorthand for writing very large or small numbers as a coefficient and power of 10.

Measurement
 isthe process and skill of finding the dimension
of physical quantity.
A fixed quantity with respect to which a
physical quantity is measured is called a unit.
A unit is use a standard of measurement.
Let’s Discover!

 How much do you weight?

 What is your height?
 How far is your school from your home?

Ex. 50 kg. 5 inches. 154 cm. 100 km

Let’s Discover!

1. Get a ruler.
2. Find a rectangular-shaped object
(notebook, book, id, desk, etc..)
3. Find the centimeters side of the ruler and
measure the objects perimeter.
4. Use the inches side of the ruler and
measure the object’s perimeter
1. Do you have the same measurement in both
cases? Why? Why not?
 No they don’t have the same measurement,
because you use two different scales and they
don’t have the same unit.
2. Which of the two scales you found harder to read/
to measure? What might be the reason?
Let’s Discuss!

 The two systems of measurement were presented in the

activity: Metric System and English System
 Metric System is adopted by System International d’Unites
of the SI system of units; internationally recognized and
used by most nations.
 MetricSystem makes calculations easy because it uses
decimal or base-10 system
 Several measurements are expressed in both Metric and
English systems.
 Can
you add 10 meters and 80 centimeters right
away? What would be the unit to be used?
 Youcannot just add two quantities because
they do not have a common unit.
 Todo the calculation, one quantity must be
changed its unit first following the unit of the
other quantity. It is know as conversion.
 Inconversion, the value or magnitude of the
quantity does not change, only the unit is changed.
Ex. 1 kg= 1000 g
Both has a different number and unit but has the
same value
Conversion Factors

Length

1 cal = 4.186 J
1 eV = 1.60 x 10-19 J

Let’s Try!

1. What is the equivalent of 40 m in cm?

Step 1: look for the conversion equivalent of meter and
centimeter
1 m = 100 cm
Step 2: follow this format: remember in this problem you
want cm
(40 m)) = 4000 cm
 the unit that will be replaced, will be cancelled out, the
unit that is left will be adopted.
Let’s Try!

2. If you are running at about 3 km/h, what is this in m/s?

two units will be replaced.

Km to m h to s
1 km = 1000 m 1h = 3600 s

Mass of an electron (approx.)

Scientific Notation

 Scientificnotation is a shorthand for writing

very large or very small number.
A number is said to be in scientific notation, if
it is written as a product of a number equal or
greater than one but less than 10, and a power
of 10. A number in scientific notation has three
parts: the coefficient, the base, and the
exponent.
Scientific Notation

M x 10n
Where:
M is the coefficient, must be equal or greater than
1 and less than 10
10 is the base
n is the exponent, it tell how many times the
decimal point is move to the left or to the right
Decimal form to scientific notation

 To change a decimal number to scientific

notation, move the understood decimal point
until there is only 1 non-zero digit on the left
side of the decimal point.
 Ifthe understood decimal point is move to the
left, the exponent is positive, and if the
decimal point is move to right, the exponent
will be negative.
