ME 3223 Power Plant Introduction
Prof. Dr. Sobahan Mia
Dept. of Mechanical Engineering Power Plant Engineering Science is at the forefront of the development of modern civilization. And the gold of this science is electricity. Without electricity, the current civilization will become dim, free and dull. Power Plant Engineering is the field of engineering that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of power plants. Power plants are facilities that generate electricity by converting various forms of energy into electrical energy. Power Plant Engineering is one of the techniques of art that we can study, use, repair, preserve, operate and place in the machines and equipment of the power plant. Power plant engineering also discusses power generation, transmission, distribution, and its use. Power Plant Engineering The power plant can be divided into the flowing categories based on the conversion of energy from different energy into power. 1. Steam Power Plant 2. Diesel Power Plant 3. Gas Power Plant Thermal Power Plant 4. Nuclear Power Plant 5. Hydro-Power Plant 6. Solar Power Plant 7. Wind Turbine Power Plant The power plant can be divided depending on the nature of load 1. Base Load Power Plant 2. Peak Load Power Plant Power Plant Power Plant INTRODUCTION Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) is a statutory body created in May 1, 1972. BPDB started its operation with Installed Generation capacity of only 200 MW. Installed Generation capacity (August’ 2023) has increased to 24,911 MW. Generation at 17 August was 14909 MW.
As part of reform and restructuring a number of Generation and Distribution
companies have been created. The subsidiaries of BPDB are: - Ashuganj Power Station Company Ltd. (APSCL) - Electricity Generation Company of Bangladesh (EGCB) - North West Power Generation Company Ltd. (NWPGCL) - West Zone Power Distribution Company Ltd. (WZPDCL) The Board is under the Power Division of the Ministry of power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Government of Bangladesh. The power system has been expanded to keep pace with the fast growing demand.
