GRADE 10 Plate-Boundaries

The document describes the three main types of plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, and transform. 1) Convergent boundaries occur when plates move towards each other and collide, forming features like mountains, volcanoes, and trenches. 2) Divergent boundaries happen when plates move apart, creating mid-ocean ridges and rift valleys as new crust is formed between the separating plates. 3) Transform boundaries form when plates slide past each other horizontally, connecting other types of boundaries together. Common examples are the San Andreas fault.

PLATE BOUNDERIES

PREPARED BY: GILBERT M. BAFLOR, LPT.

Objectives :
At the end of the session/lesson, the students
can describe the different types of plate
boundaries by;
1. Identifying the different types of plate
boundaries;
2. following the complex origin of plate
tectonics and plate boundaries;and
3. Sketching model on the different types of
plate boundaries.
Name the three types of plate
boundaries and the general
characteristic of plate movement
along each plate boundary.
Convergent Divergent Transform
Plate Boundaries
 are usually zones
of complex faults,
and mid-
continental faults
and their loading
conditions vary
greatly between
mid-continents and
parts of a
midcontinent.
Topographic features on the Earth’s surface
reflects what is happening in the mantle.
Plate Boundaries

Convergent

Divergent

Transform
Convergent Plate Boundary

 Convergent (Colliding): This occurs when

plates move towards each other and collide.
When a continental plate meets an oceanic
plate, the thinner, denser, and more flexible
oceanic plate sinks beneath the thicker, more
rigid continental plate. This is called subduction.
Convergent Plate Boundary

 Magmatic arc
 Oceanic crust subducts under continental
crust
 Melting occurs at about 100 miles
 Hot more buoyant material rises
LANDFORMS
 VOLCANOES
 MOUNTAINS

 ISLANDS

 OCEANIC TRENCES

EXAMPLE:
Himalayan mountains
Convergent
Plate Boundary
 Map and cross-
section views of the
   subduction zone
 The oceanic Juan de
Fuca plate subducts
under the
continental North
American Plate
Convergent Plate Boundary

 Two oceanic crusts

-Oceanic crust subducts under
opposing oceanic crust
-Oldest oceanic crust subducts
-island arc and trenches
Island Arc
 Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Caribbean,
Aleutian Islands
Convergent Plate Boundaries

 Two continental crusts

-Neither subduct due to buoyancy of crusts
-Mountains form
 India collided
with Asia about
40 million years
ago
 Mt. Everest,
29,000 feet
Divergent Plate Boundaries

two plates move away from each other. Molten rock

from the mantle erupts along the opening, forming
new crust.
Divergent Plate Boundary
 Two plates move apart
 Run through ocean basins
Divergent Plate Boundaries

Mid-oceanic ridges, transform faults and rift

valleys, and the formation of the ocean floor
are characteristics associated with divergent
plate boundaries.
LANDFORMS

New crust, volcanoes, mountains, ridges, and rift

valleys
Example: Mid –Atlantic Ridges
CONTINENTAL DIVERGENT

-continental plates pull apart

-Rift valley
OCEANIC DIVERGENT

Two oceanic plates moving away

-Mid- Atlantic Ridge
-new oceanic crusts
Transform Plate Boundary

 The tectonic plate

pass by each other
-Connect other plate
boundaries
Examples:
San Andreas Fault,
Alpine fault,
Transform Plate Boundary
Extension-“Pre-divergent Boundary”

Continental crust begins to stretch due to

tensional stress.
