Types of organizational decision-making processes

5 categories grouped by Nutt 1984:


 Historical - guide by precedents
 Off-the-shelf – choosing from a number of relatively obvious alternatives
 Appraisal – entails a more comprehensive, in-depth evaluation of less
familiar alternatives
 Search - takes place when no alternatives are available and the decision-
makers lack knowledge of the basis for decisions. Can involve collection
of data and analysis to provide a better picture
 Nova – requires the leader / manager and the staff in generating and
evaluating fresh ideas for implementation
