Characteristic of the Logarithm

i) To find the characteristic of the logarithm of a number greater

than 1: the characteristic of the logarithm of a number whose integral
part consists of n digits is n – 1. Accordingly, we have the following
rule:
The characteristic of the logarithm of a number greater than 1 is
positive and is one less than the number of digits in the integral part
of the number.

37
“The characteristic of the logarithm of a number greater
than 1 is positive and is one less than the number of digits
in the integral part of the number.”

(ii) To find the characteristic of the logarithm of a number lying

between 0 and 1: the characteristic of the logarithm of a number
having n zeroes between the decimal sign and the first significant
figure is – (n + 1).Accordingly, we have the following rule:

The characteristic of the logarithm of a positive number less than 1 is

negative and is numerically greater by 1 than the number of zeroes
between the decimal sign and the first significant figure of the
number.

Solving Problems Involving Exponential and logarithmic equations:

To solve exponential equations, first see whether you can write both sides of
the equation as powers of the same number. If you cannot, take the common
logarithm of both sides of the equation and then apply appropriate logarithmic
property. For logarithmic equations, simply apply the appropriate logarithmic
property/s.

Applications of Exponential
and Logarithmic equations

Logarithms are nowadays widely used in the field of science and technology. We
can even find logarithmic calculators which have made our calculations much easier.
These find their applications in surveying and celestial navigation purposes. They
are also used in calculations such as measuring the loudness (decibels), the intensity
of the earthquake regarding the Richter scale, in radioactive decay, to find the
acidity, etc.
