Lesson 4

This document provides an overview of common computer hardware components. It describes the central processing unit (CPU) as the brain of the computer where most calculations take place. Random access memory (RAM) is used to temporarily store programs and data for fast access by the CPU, while read only memory (ROM) stores permanent data. The motherboard connects all internal components and ports. Common input devices include keyboards for typing and mice for cursor control, which can be wired, wireless or Bluetooth. Output hardware discussed includes monitors for visual output, printers for printed output, and speakers for audio output. Storage devices include hard disk drives, solid state drives, and USB flash drives.

COMPUTER

COMPONENTS
PART 2
(HARDWARE)

LORNA J. ELNAS, LPT

COMPUTER
HARDWARE
What is computer hardware?

⮚ Computer hardware is the collection of all the parts you can

physically touch.
TYPES OF
COMPUTER
HARDWARE
INTERNAL/
PROCESSING
HARDWARE
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT (CPU)

⮚ It is the brain of the computer.

⮚ Most of calculations take place here.
Random Access Memory

⮚ It is the best known form of computer memory.

⮚ RAM is considered as volatile memory, which means that the

stored information is lost when there is no power.

⮚ RAM is made up of small memory chips that form a memory

module.

⮚ Whenever you open a program, it gets loaded from the hard drive
into the RAM.

⮚ This is because reading data from the RAM is much faster than
reading data from the hard drive
READ ONLY MEMORY (ROM)

⮚ It refers to computer memory chips containing permanent

or semi-permanent data.
 MOTHERBOARD

⮚ A motherboard is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in a

computer. The motherboard is a computer’s central
communications backbone connectivity point, through
which all components and external peripherals connect.
INPUT
HARDWARE
KEYBOARD

⮚ A keyboard's primary function is to act as an input device.

Using a keyboard, a person can type a document, use
keystroke shortcuts, access menus, play games and
perform a variety of other tasks
MOUSE

⮚ A device that controls the movement of the cursor or

pointer on a display screen
TYPES OF MOUSE

Wired Mouse

A wired mouse connects directly to your desktop or laptop,

usually through a USB port, and transmits information via the
cord. The cord connection provides several key advantages.
For starters, wired mice provide fast response time, as the
data is transmitted directly through the cable. They also tend to
be more accurate than other designs. This can make wired
models great for gamers, digital artists, and other users who
rely on high accuracy.
TYPES OF MOUSE

Wireless Mouse
Wireless mice transmit radio signals to a receiver connected to
your computer. The computer accepts the signal and decodes
how the cursor was moved or what buttons were clicked. While
the freedom or range with wireless models is convenient, there
are some drawbacks. The decoding process, for instance,
means that a wireless mouse is generally not as responsive to
gestures as a wired mouse. Gamers in particular might find the
lag frustrating.
TYPES OF MOUSE

Bluetooth Mouse
Wireless mouse designs and Bluetooth mouse designs tend to
look very similar, as neither need a wired connection to
operate. Most wireless mice models use a dongle that
connects to your PC, and the mouse communicates back and
forth in that manner. A Bluetooth mouse, however, utilizes an
internal Bluetooth connection on your PC, allowing you to
connect the mouse to multiple devices at a time.
Keep in mind, however, that not all devices have Bluetooth
connections. If your computer does not have an internal
Bluetooth receiver, you can get USB receiver that can be
plugged into your computer to use with your Bluetooth mouse
and other Bluetooth devices.
SCANNER

A device that can read text or illustrations printed on paper and

translate the information into a form the computer can use.
MICROPHONE

A microphone is a device that translates sound vibrations in

the air into electronic signals or scribes them to a recording
medium. Microphones enable many types of audio recording
devices for purposes including communications of many kinds,
as well as music and speech recording.
OUTPUT
HARDWARE
MONITOR

A display screen used to present output from a computer,

video camera, VCR or other video generator.
 PRINTER

In computers, a printer is a device that accepts text and

graphic output from a computer and transfers the information
to paper
Your printer might appear offline if it can't communicate with your PC. Try
following these steps to get your printer back online.

1. Check to make sure the printer is turned on and connected to the same Wi-Fi
network as your device.
2. Run a printer power cycle
3. Set your printer as the default printer.
4. Clear the print queue.
5. Reset the service that manages the printing queue.
6. Remove and re-add your printer to your device.
7. Restart your PC.
SPEAKER

A computer speaker is an output hardware device that

connects to a computer to generate sound. The signal used to
produce the sound that comes from a computer speaker is
created by the computer's sound card.
MEMORY/STORAGE
DEVICES
Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

Hard disk drives are non-volatile magnetic storage devices

capable of remembering vast amounts of data.
Solid State Drive (SSD)

⮚ Solid state drives are non-volatile storage devices capable

of holding large amounts of data.

⮚ Solid state drives perform faster then traditional hard disk

drives, however they are significantly more expensive.
USB Flash Memory

⮚ Alternatively referred to as a USB flash drive, data

stick, pen drive, memory unit, keychain drive, and thumb
drive, a jump drive is a portable storage device. It is often
the size of a human thumb (hence the name), and
connects to a computer via a USB port. Flash drives are an
easy way to store and transfer information between
computers and range in sizes from 2 GB to 1 TB.
