PROBLEM-SOLUTION
ESSAY
A problem-and-solution essay is a
piece of writing that identifies and
explains a problem and then offers
potential solutions to solve it. Effective
problem-and-solution essays have the
following traits:
a) a specific problem that can be fully
developed and supported in the essay;
b) a suggested solution;
c) facts, statistics, and details that
illustrate the problem and how it can be
solved;
d) and a logical organization.
BELOW ARE THE FIRST TWO STEPS IN
WRITING A PROBLEM-AND-SOLUTION
ESSAY:
I. Pre-writing
1. When choosing your topic for your
problem-and-solution essay, ensure
that you can produce a realistic
solution for the problem.
2. Consider your audience and purpose
a.Identify your Audience - Use
vocabularies that will appeal to your
audience. Make sure that your suggestions
will be appropriate to your audience as well.
b. State your purpose - State your purpose
in a single sentence then make use of this to
elaborate on your writing.
c. Analyzing the problem - Make time to
research about your chosen topic. Research
about the definitions, explanations, and related
information that can support your chosen topic.
d. Seeing the solution - As you plan for your
essay’s structure, research enough details about
your proposed solution. Make sure to organize
an outline to structure your thoughts.
II. Drafting
1. As a writer, your chosen topic does not make your
audience believe everything in your essay without
proper facts, statistics, examples, and anecdotes.
a. Using examples and anecdotes - As a speaker,
you may use your personal experiences as an
example; however, this will depend on your topic.
Having examples help readers to vividly picture the
point that you are trying to make. These examples
will help persuade your readers.
