PRE-COLONIAL PERIOD
• Long time before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed
in the Philippine shores, our forefathers or ancestors had
their own literature stamped in the history of our race.

Spanish Colonization Period
• Spanish occupied Philippines in the early 15 th
century.
• They colonized us for 333 years!
• After ruling for 333 years, the Spaniards
finally left in 1898.
• During this period, they imprinted two
distinct classifications – religious and secular.

American Colonization Period
• Philippine literature in English, as a
direct result of American
colonization. Philippines has not
escaped being imitative of American
models of writing especially during
this period.

• This period considered the war
years and period of maturity and
originality.

• Many novels in English seem to have been written

Balagtasismo, and modernism, formalism and
historical criticism has persisted to this day in the
academe.

What is a critique paper?
A good critique paper is one that is accurate in
presenting the summary and other factual details
concerning the subject or work.
It is evaluative.
It presents the writer’s overall judgment of the text.
It explains why it does happen that way, or why the
character reacts in a certain manner, or is the theme
timely, or does the plot of the story makes sense.
