Have you ever read a story or an

article before?

Have you ever wondered how the

authors write those things down?
Have you ever wondered why they
wrote stories, articles or even ads?
Text Types
Learning Target/s:
● Identify the structure,
purpose, and language
features of different text types
(e.g., descriptive, narrative,
expository, argumentative).
What are text types?

Text types in literature

form the basic styles of
writing.
Descriptive
 Re-creates, invents, or visually presents a person,
place, event, or action so that the reader can picture
that which is being described. Descriptive writing is
usually used to help a writer develop an aspect of
their work, e.g., to create a particular
mood/atmosphere or describe a place so that the
reader can create vivid pictures of characters, places,
objects, etc.
Narrative
 Tells a story or narrates an event or
series of events. The basic purpose of a
narrative is to entertain, i.e., to gain and
hold readers' interest. In a traditional
narrative, the focus of the text is on a
series of actions.
Expository
 Explains and analyzes information by
presenting an idea, relevant evidence, and
appropriate discussion. The writer's purpose
is to explain how something works or state
reasons for some phenomenon. This text
type answers the questions “how” or “why.”
Argumentative
 Compares alternative points of view, judges, and
persuades. The writer's purpose is to take a position
on some issue and justify it. Persuasive writing is
intended to present a point of view on an issue
being debated or to market a particular product,
process, or line of thought. The author sets out to
state their view in a way that will influence others.
Let’s have an ACTIVITY………
Activity 1:

Identify the types of text in

the given paragraph.
I remember when I first arrived in Boracay. Even before the
plane landed, the little windows in the airplane revealed the
warm sun and sand-covered beach houses. As I walked off
the plane, warm air crept through the corrugated ramp that
led to the airport terminal. I felt a little dizzy and needed to
sit down, and then my cell phone rang. It was my Aunt
Sophia. She was waiting for me outside in the passenger
pick-up area, so I walked quickly to the exit, forgetting all
about my luggage. When the sliding glass door opened to
the outside, there was my aunt–a woman I hadn’t seen in
over ten years–wearing a long straw hat and waving her
arms frantically in my direction.
The lemur has a moist nose and a cleft upper lip. It
has a striking foxlike muzzle and a good sense of
smell. Most lemurs have nails on the fingers and
toes, except for the second toe, which bears a claw.
This is called the ‘toilet claw,’ because it is used in
grooming. Lemurs also groom their fur with the
tongue and the lower front teeth, which slant
outward almost horizontally. Generally speaking,
lemurs and their relatives are small mammals with
thick or woolly hair and large eyes. Some have long
bushy tails; others, rat-like tails; a few, only a stub.
There are many reasons why I always brush
my teeth three times a day. First, brushing is
healthy. Furthermore, it helps you avoid
getting cavities. Lastly, my breath smells
good. When people do not brush their
teeth, you can smell their bad breath and
see their dirty teeth. To sum up, I brush my
teeth three times a day because it is
healthy, smells good, and attractive.
People often think all planets are alike, but there are actually
three types of planets in the solar system. The terrestrial planets
are made of rock and metal and are closest to the sun. These
include the midsize planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
They rotate slowly and don’t have many moons. Further from the
sun are the planets called gas giants, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and
Neptune. They are called gas giants because they are formed
from gases such as hydrogen and helium. Gas giants rotate fast
and have many moons. Finally, planetoids are objects made up of
rock and ice and are too small to be true “planets.” Planetoids
sometimes even get pulled into a planet’s gravitational field and
become moons themselves. Whether they are terrestrials, gas
giants, or planetoids, the planets in the solar system are
fascinating.
