ABSTRACT

* Valve prings play an important role in the breathing of I. C. Engine.

stiffness of valve spring in an I.C. Engine adversely affects the combustion
process and hampers the Dynamic characteristics of engine.

* Therefore, it is very essential to measure the stiffness of spring before replacement.

Hence, there is a need of a machine that could easily measure the stiffness and
stresses induced in those springs failing which may lead to failure of those springs.

* This spring testing machine mainly comprises of lead screw mechanism with hand wheel to
apply the load, frame and measuring units to measure the applied load and resulting
deflection of spring.

* S-beam load cell is used to measure the load and ultrasonic transducer
or sensor to measure the deflection. Interfacing of these sensors with Lab view software is done
to get the value of spring stiffness directly. Coil springs having diameter up to 50mm and length
up to 100 mm can be easily tested on the machine.

*The second part of the project involves comparison of experimental results with the analytical
& simulation results.
OBJECTIVES

•The main objective of this project is to determine the stiffness which is commonly known as
spring constant of compression spring under various load.

•The kit which has been built into a machine to stretch or compress test springs,
while measuring load and displacement is called spring testing kit.
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Spring
A spring is defined as an elastic machine element, which deflects under the action of the load
& returns to its original shape when the load is removed. Mechanical springs are used in machine
designs to exert force, provide flexibility, and to store or absorb energy. Springs are manufactured
for many different applications such as compression, extension, torsion, power, and constant force.
Depending on the application, a spring may be in a static, cyclic or dynamic operating mode.
A spring is usually considered to be static if a change in deflection or load occurs only a few times,
such as less than 10,000 cycles during the expected life of the spring. A static spring may remain loaded
for very long periods of time. The failure modes of interest for static springs include spring relaxation,
set and creep.
Springs are used for control of motion, storing of energy for the purpose of measuring forces.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

•Many companies manufacture spring machine and they required the springs for installing
in their products. Design and develop the spring testing machine by using electronic circuit .

•They Also fabricate the model of the same which will show the working desired by
• design and develop of spring stiffness testing machine.
RESEARCH METHOD

•At first assemble the spring tester on a task frame (MF, separately).
•The kit includes a spring for tensile tests and a different spring for
• compression tests.
•Then apply a compressive or tensile force to the spring by turning an adjustment screw.
• A load cell (available separately) shows the force applied to the spring.
• By moving freely with the load cell, scales behind the spring directly measure
• the spring extension or compression. From the value of load, displacement
we can easily measure the spring constant using Hooke`s Law.

A complete list of essential equipment is given below:

A. Spring
The test includes a compression spring.
B. Frame
High quality, specially made frames that provides a sturdy base to
set up experiments. There are two frames. The larger upright frame
FUTURE SCOPE

By using various type of sensor, counter (display) & handling system we can stop machine
automatically.
And digital cycle counter register the spring fatigue life. By using high performance electric motor,

compression force can be increases. The test spring has infinite life as the number of cycle
exceeds the high cycle value.

The result of this work will help in spring design and manufacturing methodology.
We use this machine for checking of helical spring as well as leaf spring and calculating its life in time
period.
We also making an adjustment for variation in load,
large range of dimensions and speed
