How to solve a problem in maths

Use these strategies to help you to solve different kinds of mathematical


problems.
Act Out the Situation
If I put myself in the situation, will this help me think of how to solve the
problem?
Draw a Picture, Diagram or
Make a Model
Will a picture, diagram or model make this problem easier or clearer to think
about?
Use More Simple Numbers
Can I change the numbers in the question to make it easier?
Will this help me find the actual answer?
Look for Key Information
Highlight any important words or information in the problem.
Do these words help make the problem clearer?
Look for a Pattern
Can you see something repeatedly happening?
Can you use this pattern to solve the problem?
Make an Organised List or Table
Can you organise information from the question into a list or table?
Will that help make the problem easier?
Guess, Check and Improve
Try an answer and see if it works or makes sense?
Can you find a better answer?
Work Backwards
Can I start at the end of the question to work out the answer?
Does my answer then work the right way around?
Reason Logically
Do I know something about what the answer should or should not be straight
away?
Use Trial and Error
Try an answer. Does it work? If not, try again and keep trying!
