Parameter and Statistics

The document discusses parameters and statistics, defining them as measures that describe populations and samples, respectively. Parameters are usually denoted with Greek letters and include values like the population mean, variance, and standard deviation. Statistics are denoted with Roman letters and include the sample mean, variance, and standard deviation. Several examples are provided to demonstrate calculating population and sample measures and distinguishing between parameters and statistics.

PARAMETERS AND STATISTICS
A parameter is a measure that
describes a population. Parameters
usually denoted by Greek letters. The
population mean population variance
2,
and population standard deviation
are examples of parameters.
On the other hand, a statistic is a
measure that describes a sample.
Statistics are usually denoted by
Roman letters. Examples of statistics
are sample mean x, sample variance
s and sample standard deviation s.

POPULATION SAMPLE
The population mean is the mean of
the entire population. It is
represented by the Greek letter mu ()
and is computed using the formula:
=
where x= individual datum
N= population size
EXAMPLE 1
The number of workers in six
outlets of a fast food restaurant are
12,10, 11, 15, 12, and 14. Treating
these data as a population, find the
population mean.

POPULATION VARIANCE AND
POPULATION STANDARD DEVIATION
Variance and standard deviation are widely used
measures of dispersion of data in research. The
population variance 2 is the sum of the squared
deviations of each datum from the population
mean divided by the population size N. The
population standard deviation is the square root
of the population variance 2.

values randomly selected from the population.
