R&D Priority Area & Program (based on HNRDA 2017-2022):

Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources:
Commodity: Water
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Addressed:
Clean water and Sanitation
PROJECT OVERVIEW

The proposed study targeted the construction of a new water facility that can purify
rainwater at the Technological University of the Philippines – Cavite. Assessing its long-
term advantage for human being as well as with the environment, this will provide
opportunities and knowledge concerning the current situation of water in the country and
allow the students, teachers, parents, school officials, and residents of the community in
Salawag, Dasmarinas who are concerned about the school's wellbeing utilize a fresh and
clean water without wasting the main water resources. Using This water facility will
contribute to the conservation of water and guarantee that the school has adequate, non-
contaminated water which is suitable for all living things and safe to use for both students
and instructors in the university.
RATIONALE/SIGNIFICANCE

According to a study made by a non-profit organization called water.org, about three million
Filipino relies on unsustainable water sources and about seven million lacks access to it. In a data
gathered by cavite.gov.ph, Cavite belongs to a type 1 climate based on the categorization of
Philippines by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
(PAGASA). Type 1 climate means that Cavite experiences dry season from November to April
and wet season for the rest of the year.

Philippines experiences water crisis and rainfall so, by convenience and reliability, the
researchers decided to use rainwater as a water source. Using mainly sand and activated carbon
the researchers will develop a filter that will make rainwater clean and usable for utility purposes.
SCIENTIFIC BASIS/THEORETICAL
FRAMEWORK

The researcher’s project is inspired on the study made by Dalawampu,

Mabeza, and Pimental titled “Reduction of Contamination from Water using
Rainwater Filtration System in NCR, Philippines” (2022), their data shows that an
effective rainwater filtration system can be constructed using materials such as
activated coconut carbon, gravel, sand, and filter wool. By examining the filtered
rainwater their data shows that contaminants such as chloride, chemical oxygen
demand (COD), phosphate, nitrate, acidity, and basicity (pH), total suspended
solids (TSS), and fecal coliform, all experienced a reduction of contamination
percentage compared to the unfiltered rainwater.
OBJECTIVES

Water is an essential part of our daily lives, experiencing water crisis, water shortage, and
usage of contaminated water should not be tolerated. According to the Philippines Statistics
Authority (PSA), Philippines mainly relies on groundwater for our domestic, industrial, and
commercial usage of water. Exploring other sources of water should be a priority and the
researcher’s project will rely on filtration system and rainwater.

General Objective: Specific Objective/s:

• The overall objective of this project • To produce an effective filtration

is to design a filtration system that system using economical materials
will reduce contaminants on • For the filtered water to pass water
rainwater to a usable level and quality guidelines
provide a reliable source of water. • To consistently utilize rainwater as
a resource
Most remote areas around the world are finding it difficult to find clean and
adequate water sources. Even though there are more natural water resources
in countryside, it does not count due to contamination of the resources that can
directly affect the health of locals living in the area. As Kalayaan, Laguna,
Philippines belongs to the Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas
(GIDA) the University of the Philippines Los Banos, Laguna conducted research
regarding the perception of the community and their willingness to acknowledge
rainwater harvesting as one of their primary water sources. Having a rainy
season in the country is one of the major factors that will be assess by the
researchers for the success of the facility. Most respondents are agreeing with
the idea and willing to pay for the implementation of the future project.
Rainwater harvesting will not only act as a water source but also help the
community and government to properly execute water management.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
METHODOLOGY

In this study, the researchers will have the collection of data through the
filtrated water by measuring the different levels of contaminants, PPM,
acid content, color, and other variables to ensure the safety of the water
using modern apparatus and/or equipment. This will be done through the
filtration system the researchers have devised using simple, cheap, yet
high quality materials that will, in the long run, be very useful for every
student in the university.

The researchers want the product produced in this research to be
commercially available and accessible. They also want it to be helpful in
the community and the environment for the long term by saving water and
processing it for further use.

TARGET BENEFICIARIES

The proposed project is o mainly intended for the members of the

Technological University of the Philippines – Cavite located in
Salawag, Dasmarinas. It includes the faculties, students, helpers
as well as the other people staying inside the said university to
provide clean and sustainable water. On the other hand, the
project is also applicable to the other communities in the area
since they are also experiencing the same issue with water.
SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

The sustainability of the said

project is one of the many priorities
of the researchers, for it will not only
benefits the current students but to
the future once as well that will take
part in the university. The following
are the plans that the researchers
have devised for the prolonging of
the project:
SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

Financial Plan
• In this section of the plan, the researchers have discussed about the risks when it comes to
financial problems and limitations. They have discussed that in order for the project to
flourish, they will use high quality materials with a reasonable financial range or price. With
this, they will still have the procedures of the project, safety of the people, and the result
itself on a very high standard and capability with no risk of wasting large amount of money.

Environmental Plan
• In this section of the plan, the researchers have discussed about the risks the environment
can have before, during, and after the project. The researchers aim to use eco- friendly
materials in order to lessen the effects it can have in the environment.

Social Plan
• In this part of the plan, the researchers aim to have a project that will not only help the
students to have access to water in the university, but to also have a facility dedicated only
for his sole purpose on an easy to reach and accessible for everyone.
LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT

As for the limitations of the said project, the researchers have

identified one of them which is the main concern. The facility
will use any existing water, just like rainwater or any water
source that needs filtration and purification, which means that
if there is no water, the facility won’t be as much of a use.
LIST OF RISKS AND ASSUMPTIONS RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN

The risk enlisted on the project is mainly the safety of the facility itself.

1. Trespassing within the premises or inside of the facility is one of the

concerns of the researchers which can lead to stealing of equipment or
materials.

2. Contamination of the filtration unit or system that may lead to health

issues once it is running again.

To make this not happen, the researchers came up to the idea of an

inspection every single day before the facility opens up and after the day is
through, which can mitigate of the said risk of happening, and a security system
can be also installed in it.
