Socket Weld & Screwed

Fittings
1. BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE DIFFERENT TYPES
OF FITTINGS AND HOW THEY ARE USED.

2. KNOW FITTING REPRESENTATION FOR PIPING

PLAN DRAWING AND PIPING ISOMETRIC.

3. CALCULATE SCREWED AND SOCKTWELD

FITTING MAKEUP CONFIGURATION.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
Socketweld and Screwed fittings function primarily
the same as buttweld fittings but differ in the method
of joining and dimensioning.

Normally used in sizes 2” and smaller piping

systems.

Usually classified as “Field Fab”

INTRODUCTION:
FITTING PRESSURE CLASS

 Threaded Fittings
(Air and Water Services)

125# Cast Iron

250# Cast Iron  Socket Weld Fittings
150# Malleable Iron (for Added Strength)

300# Malleable Iron 3000# Forged Steel

 Threaded Fittings 6000# Forged Steel
(High Pressure and/or High Temperature)

2000# Forged Steel

3000# Forged Steel
6000# Forged Steel
SOCKETWELD FITTINGS:

FITTINGS HAVE DEEP SOCKETS, WHICH THE PIPE

SLIPS INTO AND ALIGNS ITSELF. (Advantage:
Eliminates special clamps or tack welding for
alignment prior to final fitup weld.)

THE WELD IS THEN MADE ON THE OUTER

SURFACE OF THE PIPE AND FITTINGS. (Advantage:
Prevents weld material from entering the bore.)
MAJORITY OF SCREWED FITTINGS WILL HAVE
FEMALE (INTERNAL) THREADS PER “NPT”
(NATIONAL PIPE THREAD).

EXCEPTIONS WILL BE SWAGES AND PLUGS

WHICH WILL HAVE MALE (EXTERNAL) THREADS.

SCREWED FITTINGS:
Socket-End Connections

*1/16” GAP IS TO PREVENT THE

WELD FROM CRACKING
UNDER THERMAL STRESS.

Screwed-End Connections

**SEAL-WELDING IS REQUIRED
FOR THREADED JOINTS IN
HYDROGEN LETHAL AND
TOXIC SERVICES.

NOTE:
THREAD COMPOUND IS REQUIRED.
UNLESS CONNECTION IS TO BE SEAL-
WELDED.

PIPE NIPPLE:

A short piece of pipe used to connect two SW

or SCW’D fittings together.

Comes in set lengths

A common use is to maintain the minimum

required distance between fittings. (Distance is
required for wrench or welding clearance.)
Minimum distance is 2” but we will use a
minimum 3” Long Nipple between fittings as a rule
for this class.
