Basic Science JSS2 Week 2

This document discusses work, energy, force and power. It defines key terms like work, energy, force and power. It provides examples of calculating work done by lifting masses and examples of calculating power. It lists five sources of energy and seven forms of energy. It also states the law of conservation of energy that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another.

WORK, ENERGY AND

POWER
BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able
to;
1.Define work, energy, force and power.
2.Solve problems related to work, force and energy.
3.State five sources of energy.
4.List 7 forms of energy.
5.State the law of conservation of energy.
Work
Work is a product of and distance moved in the
direction of the force. The quantity of work done is
always equal to the quantity of the energy put in.
Work (W) = Force (F) = distance = (d) moved in the
direction of the force.

W=F×d
Energy
Energy is the ability or capacity to do work. Both work
and energy are measured in joules named after the
scientist P. Joules.
Power
Power is defined as the rate of doing work. The unit of
power is Watts (W)

Power = work done / time taken

Force
Force is that which changes a body’s state of rest or
uniform motion in a straight line. It can also be seen as
a Push or Pull

Force = mass × acceleration

F=m×a
FORCE
The unit for force is Newton (N)
If force = mass × acceleration
Work = force × distance
Therefore
work = mass × acceleration × distance
W=m×a×d
Examples
1.What work is done when a mass of 5.0kg is raised through a
vertical height of 2.5m (acceleration due to gravity = 10m/s2)
Solution
Data
Mass = 5.0kg, acceleration = 10m/s2, distance = height =
2.5m
Therefore W = m × a × d
= 5 × 10 × 2.5
= 125 joules
EXAMPLES
2.What is the power of a child that has done a work of
50J in 10 seconds?
Solution
From Power = work done / time taken
Data
W = 50J, Time taken = 10 sec, P = ?
P = 50/10
Power = 5 watts
EXAMPLES
3.If two persons, A and B pushed the same load of
about 30kg through the same distance of 50m. A did
the work in 45 seconds, B took 60 seconds. Calculate
the work done and also the power of A and B. Which of
the persons is more powerful than the other?
(acceleration = 10 m/s2)
Solution
W=f×d F=m×a W=m×a×d
EXAMPLES CONT.
Data
a = 10 m/s2, d = 50m, m =3kg
W = 3 × 10 × 50
W = 1500J
Power of A = w/time
= 1500/45
= 33 watts
EXAMPLES CONT.
Power of B = w/time
= 1500/60
= 25 watts
Therefore, A is more powerful than B.
Sources of Energy
• The sources of energy include; sunlight, food,
coal, natural gas, wood and petrol.
Forms of Energy
The forms of energy include;
i.Solar
ii.Heat
iii.Light
iv.Nuclear
Forms of Energy
Energy conversion
The law of conservation of energy states that energy
can neither be created nor destroyed but can only
change from one form to another. Solar energy is the
main source of energy on earth. It comes as light and
heat and is transformed to other forms.
Vocabulary Review
a.Capacity
b.Uniform motion
c.Acceleration
d.Conservation of energy
e.Kinetic energy
f.Potential energy
