Antenna Pointing

1. Set the elevation angle roughly based on the inclinometer reading and ensure the dish is on a level surface. 2. Use the compass to point the dish in the rough azimuth direction of the satellite. 3. Connect the spectrum analyzer and scan elevation and azimuth angles in small steps to maximize the signal strength for fine tuning. 4. Check the polarization angle by calling the NOC who will contact Arabsat to perform a measurement and advise on any needed adjustments.

Needed information

Gear
• Spectrum Analyzer
• Pointing Kit (2 f-type cables, 1 splitter, 1 N plug
to F jack)
• Inclinometer (Bevel box)
• Compass
• Information
• Elevation value
• Azimuth value (true)
• LNB skew value

1
Dish-pointer

• •Enter the location of the SIT

• •Select the correct satellite
Dish-pointer (2)
Rough pointing
•The value of the elevation of the antenna must be
read as marked in the picture. In this example, the
elevation is 29˚.
–Make sure the dish is installed on a flat surface without any elevation

•Use the compass/inclinometer for rough pointing

of the azimuth

4
Rough Pointing (2)
•Set the polarisation angle, using the label
on the feed
Fine Pointing -Connecting the splitter
Fine pointing –spectrum analyzer

•Following settings should be set in the

spectrum analyzer:

Example; Ku-band . ArabSat 5A

Beacon Frequency 10.706 GHz
Span 1 Ghz
Resolution bandwidth (RBW) 300 kHz
Video bandwidth (VBW) 3 kHz
Attenuation (Att) 0 or 10 dB
Range 5 dB/div
Fine Pointing

•Set the frequency span of the spectrum analyzer to

10 MHz
•Read out the current signal strength
•Check the manual of the dish(es) on how to fine-
tune the pointing
Fine Pointing (2)
•Start fine-tuning the elevation angle
–Move the dish up and down in small steps to find the
angle with the best signal.

•Start fine-tuning the azimuth angle using the fine-tune

bolts
–Move the dish up and down in small steps to find the
angle with the best signal.
Fine Pointing -Polarisation
•After the fine-tuning of the angles, the polarisation angle
has to be checked.
•To check the polarisation angle, call the NOC
•The NOC will contact Arabsat
•Arabsat AOC will perform a cross-polarisation isolation
measurement and inform you on the needed adjustments
Satellite movement

•Satellites do not remain at the exact same spot.

•Satellites swirl in a box around the orbital position.

•This swirl grows during the lifetime of a satellite to

save fuel, or due to a technical problem.
–E.g. Arabsat 2B (C-band Menos)
SUMMARY: Antenna Pointing
1. Set elevation (rough)
2. 2. Scan for satellite (azimuth)
3. 3. Scan for satellite (elevation)
4. Repeat step 2 and 3 for fine tuning

• Avoid degraded signal (or temporary pointing!!)

• Perform pointing at the moment the satellite is
close to the center of the box

Check Arabsat website for best timing for pointing
