PARALLEL LINES
CUT BY A
TRANSVERSAL
Parallel Lines can be defined as two lines in the same plane that are at
equal distance from each other and never meet. They can be both
horizontal and vertical.
Transversal Line passes through two lines in the same plane at two
distinct points. Transversals play a role in establishing the parallelism of
two or more other straight lines in the Euclidean plane. It intersects two
lines at distinct points. Intersection caused by transversal forms several
angles.

PARALLEL LINES

TRANSVERSAL
Corresponding angles in geometry are defined as the angles which
are formed at corresponding corners when two parallel lines are
intersected by a transversal. Corresponding angles are congruent.
∠1 , ∠5; ∠2 , ∠6; ∠3 , ∠7; ∠4, ∠8
Vertical Angles - pair of opposite angles made by two intersecting lines
and they are congruent.

Alternate Interior Angles - are the angles formed when a transversal
intersects two coplanar lines. They lie on the “inner side” of the parallel lines
but on the opposite sides of the transversal and they are congruent.
∠4 and ∠5; ∠3 and ∠6
Alternate Exterior Angles - are the angles formed when a transversal
intersects two coplanar lines. They lie on the “outer side” of the parallel lines
but on the opposite sides of the transversal and they are congruent.
∠1 and ∠8; ∠2 and ∠7

Same-Side Interior Angles - are the pairs of angles that are between two
lines and on the same side of the line cutting through the two lines and they
are supplementary.
∠3 and ∠5; ∠4 and ∠6
These pairs of angles are supplementary, therefore m ∠3+ m ∠5=180°; and

Consider the figure, given that m∠2=70° .

What is the m∠3?

m∠3=70°
Since ∠2 and 3 are vertical lines so they are congruent.
What is the m∠6?
m∠6=70°
Since ∠2 and 6 are corresponding angles and they are congruent.
What is the m∠1, m∠4, m∠5, m∠8?
m∠1 + m∠2 =180° Since they are linear pair . m∠1 + 70° =180° ,
m∠1 =180° - 70° ; m∠1 = 110°
m∠1 = m∠4 = m∠5 = m∠8 =110° (Pair of vertical angles)

Properties, Theorems
and Postulates on
Parallel lines cut by a
Transversal
A. Parallel Postulates: If there is a line and a point not on the line, then
there is exactly one line through the point that is parallel to the given
line.
Also, two or more lines are parallel if you find the symbols like the ones
illustrated below.
Mario is an owner of Balungao Hilltop Adventure found in Balungao,
Pangasinan in which one of his offered rides to the public is a zip line. A
zip line is a very strong cable between two points with a pulley attached
to it. The zip line as illustrated in the figure below goes from a 25-foot
tall tower, represented by c to a 20-foot tower as d and it is 200 meters
apart in a slightly inclined ground.

c g

h
Which line are considered to be parallel lines?
The two posts where the cable is connected, represented by line 𝒄 and
line 𝒅, are the two parallel lines (𝒄 ∥ 𝒅).
Which line is a transversal line?
The cable which is represented by line g is called the transversal. The
imaginary line h that is drawn with the ground is also considered
transversal line since it cuts the two posts at distinct points.
