THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION
OF HUMAN RIGHTS
 Human rights rest upon a fundamental philosophical claim that there exists a rationally identifiable
moral order, an order whose legitimacy precedes contingent social and historical conditions and
always applies to all human beings everywhere and. According to Nickel (1992), “they exist and are
available standards of justification and criticism whether or not they are recognized or implemented by
the legal system or officials of a country.” Human rights aim to identify the basis for determining the
shape, content, and scope of fundamental public norms.
 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is an international document that states basic
rights and fundamental freedoms to which all human beings are entitled
 The Universal Declaration commences by acknowledging that the integral dignity of a person is the
foundation of freedom, justice, and peace. It pronounces that human rights are universal that are to be
appreciated by all people - black or white, tall or small, rich or poor.
 The Universal Declaration, which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December
10, 1948, has 30 articles. It embraces civil and political rights, like the right to life, liberty, free speech,

THE CORE VALUES AND GUIDING
PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY ACTION
The UDHR serves as the inspiration, platform, and reference of community action. The values
and principles that guide social development workers, community organizers, and social
advocates are heavily influenced by the UDHR.
1. Human Rights
 These are inherent in all human beings, whatever their nationality, place of residence, sex,
national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other status is. We are all equally
entitled to our human rights without discrimination.
2. Social Justice
 According to the Global Issues Pilot Team (2011), social justice is "societal value which
guides' human interaction and, in particular, the fair distribution of society's benefits,
advantages, and assets, not just by the law and in the courts but in all aspects of society."

PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY ACTION
3. Empowerment and Advocacy
 According to World Bank, empowerment is defined as "gaining power and control over
decisions and resources that determine the quality of life." Broadly, the term refers to the
expansion of freedom of choice and action.
4. Participatory Development
 It highlights the involvement of the voiceless, those who are marginalized in the
development process. It gives recognition and importance to the poor and disadvantaged
people, as well as a chance for them to be heard and get involved in the development
process.
5. Gender Equality and Equity
 It seeks the equal treatment of men and women. This means equal opportunities in life,
elimination of discrimination based on gender, equal pay for equal work, and others.
