Lesson 4 - Frictional Force

The document discusses frictional force and its different types. It defines frictional force as a contact force that resists the motion of objects. There are two main types of friction - static friction which acts on stationary objects, and kinetic friction which allows objects to overcome static friction and move. Kinetic friction includes sliding friction, rolling friction, fluid friction, and air friction. The document provides examples of each type of friction and how factors like lubricants can reduce friction between surfaces.

What is frictional force?

FRICTIONAL FORCE
• It is an example of contact force.
• It is a force that exists when one surface
slides over another.
• It resists the motion of an object.
TYPES OF FRICTION

KINETIC
FRICTION
STATIC 4 KINDS
FRICTION Sliding Friction
Rolling Friction
Air Friction
Fluid Friction
STATIC FRICTION
It occurs in stationary objects or
objects at rest.
It is a type of friction that neither
moves or prevents an object from
moving against a surface.

Examples:
table at rest, a book on top of the tilted
table, a car park in a tilted road
KINETIC FRICTION

It is a type of friction that allows the

object to move if it overcomes the force
of friction.

It has four kinds / examples: sliding,

rolling, fluid and air.
ROLLING FRICTION

It is a friction that needs less force to

overcome the movement of an object.

Examples:
bowling ball rolling down the alley, roller
skates, skateboard
SLIDING FRICTION

It is also called dry friction.

It occurs when two objects or surfaces
rub against and come in contact with
each other.

Examples:
a boy sliding, a block of wood is moved on
sand paper, pushing an object on the floor
FLUID FRICTION

It occurs between moving objects and a

liquid which leads to drag.

Examples:
swimmer swimming in water, water
opposes the motion of the sail, boat
traveling on water
AIR FRICTION

It acts on an object that is falling or

moving through air.

Examples:
leaves falling on a tree, a plane in the air
Is force and motion necessary in our
daily activities and in the
environment? Why?
EXAMPLES OF FRICTION ON SPORTS
Basketball – use of rubber shoes
Tennis – use of tennis shoes and grips on the rack
handle
Soccer – rolling friction on the ball

Why is friction very important in any

kind of sports?
Are there ways to overcome or
reduce the friction of an object?
LIST DOWN
List down possible ways to reduce or
increase friction of a moving object. Post
your list in your respective channels.
WAYS TO INCREASE FRICTION

• putting pebbles on the road

• applying rubber sheets in grips
• a piece of cloth wrapped on cap to open a bottle or
container
• using carpet on the floor
• tractions on the soles of your shoes
WAYS TO DECREASE FRICTION

• applying lubricants to a surface

• reducing contact between moving surfaces
• minimizing the contact between rough surfaces
• using aerodynamic shapes
