Principles of Pervasive Computing

The document discusses the principles of pervasive computing which include decentralization, diversification, connectivity, and simplicity. It defines each principle and provides examples. It also categorizes pervasive computing devices into three categories based on screen size - very small screen devices (like blackberries), small screen devices (like palm computers), and medium screen devices (like Honeywell's webpad).

SUBJECT: Mobile And Pervasive Computing
TITLE : Principles Of Pervasive Computing –
Principles Of Pervasive Computing :
 Decentralization
Diversification
Connectivity
Simplicity
Decentralization : All computing is done by
basic, small devices that are unintelligent, yet
communicate in an open community where the
structure of connections changes dynamically.
Based on distributed systems .
With information synchronization .
Diversification:Devices are small and special
purpose, supplying a few, or even just one
type of information.
Should target on different user with different
needs
Must be able to mange the diversity .
Connectivity:Dumb devices can produce powerful
and intelligent behaviour, if multiple devices act in
parallel linked by an underlying infrastructure. (eg)
The Internet.
Boundless connectivity
Simplicity:We must never notice that it exists.  If
people have to constantly tweak, adjust, enter data
to manage the connections, then the hive will never
become pervasive.  The standards need to be open,
to be as non restrictive as possible.
Convenient and intuitive to use
Categories of pervasive computing:
Very small screen devices
Small screen devices
Medium screen devices
Very small screen devices
Among the many mobile and wireless connected
devices those with very small screen seem at first
useless. The user is limited to a typically four line
colorless LCD display. These devices offer a simple
keyboard that allow a simple interaction.
Typical example of these devices web enabled mobile
devices and the popular blackberry of RIM
Example of very small screen devices :
Small Screen Devices :
This category of devices is characterised by display
that range between 5&8 inches. typically these
devices except the user to interact using a special
pen.clicking on the screen and recognizing the user
hand writting offers a simple &efficient interaction.
Example: palm computer
Medium screen devices :
Devices with screen between 9-15 inches are
considered medium sized.
Two types of devices are in this category notebook
computer and webpads.while the notebook
computer tends to be miniaturized version of a
desktop machine. The web pad represents the new
development.
Example of medium screen devices: honeywells
webpad
