the person says or saying the
person’s ideas in some other way.

•The paraphrase technique is based on
the premise that an individual
expresses an idea and that idea is
restated in another way by the listener,
the speaker will clarify, expand upon, or
further explore the ideas and feelings
embodied in the statement.

clarity in communication by
reducing the problems that are
created by selective perception.

1. Restate the other person’s
expressed ideas and feelings in
your own words.
2. Introduce your paraphrase with
a tentative introductory phrase.

5. Where necessary, paraphrase
the other’s response in order to
secure the most accurate
understanding possible.

1. He was saddened by the news.
P: The news depressed him.
2. The majority of consumers
prefer imported cars.
P: Foreign cars are preferred by
most customers.

3. Niagara Falls is viewed by
thousands of tourists every year.
P: Each year, thousands of people
visit Niagara Falls.

4. It was a spacious room with lit candles all
over it.
P: Candles flickered from many parts of the
large room.
5. The grey clouds were a warning of an
approaching storm.
P: The coming storm was foretold by the dark
clouds.

included.
• It is considered as a process of taking
information from a comparatively longer
chapter, theory, or write-up and creating a
smaller version of it that covers all the facts
and main points of the original version.
